Varol Akman is a professor in the Department of Computer Engineering at Ihsan Dogramaci Bilkent University. During the period 2002-2015, he worked as the founding chair of the Department of Philosophy at Bilkent. His research in AI is two-pronged: (i) context and (ii) commonsense reasoning. Other interests include the internet & society and AI & law. A Fulbright scholar from 1980-1985, Akman received his Ph.D. in computer & systems engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Prior to joining Bilkent, he worked at Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica (1986-1988) and Universiteit Utrecht (1985-1986).
