I am a biochemist by training, and am now retired. My lab was engaged in determining the structure and function of bacterial and archaeal enzymes of potential biomedical importance. We probed the structure and function of chorismate-utilizing enzymes from antibiotic-producing bacteria. During my research career, I also looked at phosphofructokinases and anthranilate synthases from various bacteria and archaea. I have ongoing interests in several areas outside biochemistry, including ecological ethics and bioethics, climate change, the history of biology, and the science-religion debate.
