This paper introduces critical interactionism, a theoretical and methodological framework that synthesizes the observational rigor of microsociology with the emancipatory aims of critical theory. Drawing on symbolic interactionism, ethnomethodology, and conversation analysis alongside Marxist, feminist, anarchist, and critical race traditions, the framework addresses a persistent divide in sociology between micro-level empirical observation and macro-level structural critique. The central argument is that domination is not an abstract force but is actively constituted and reproduced through mundane, observable social interactions. Through two ethnographic vignettes—a homeless outreach encounter and a doctoral seminar—the paper demonstrates how institutional power, gendered hierarchy, and "compassionate control" operate at the level of turn-taking, spatial intrusion, bodily examination, and conversational interruption. The paper traces the theoretical genealogy of interactionist perspectives, engages advances in recording technology that enable fine-grained analysis of situated action, and situates critical interactionism within broader theories of social action. It concludes with a call for praxis—research that moves beyond description toward collaborative, margin-centered, and politically engaged social science capable of both documenting and dismantling structures of domination in everyday life.

The Rise of Religious Naturalism: A New Public Theology of Sacred Nature explores the emergence of Religious Naturalism (RN) as both a theological orientation and an evolving cultural movement. Drawing on a genealogy that extends from Spinoza, Emerson, and Dewey through Crosby, Goodenough, Wildman, Corrington, Hogue, and Wheeler, the essay situates RN as a pluralistic tradition that grounds reverence, meaning, and ethical commitment in the natural world without recourse to supernaturalism. While RN has secured intellectual legitimacy through its Apollonian emphasis on rational clarity, scientific credibility, and philosophical rigor, it has often neglected the Dionysian dimensions of religion—ritual, ecstasy, embodiment, and communal transformation. This paper argues that RN now stands at a crossroads: to move from a worldview to a lived religion, it must integrate these missing dimensions. The constructive proposal of Dionysian Religious Naturalism (DRN) addresses this need, envisioning a public theology of sacred nature that weds intellectual seriousness with embodied practice, ritual innovation, and ecological insurgency. DRN seeks to cultivate a religion of sacred immanence adequate to the crises of the Anthropocene—capable of inspiring reverence, sustaining communities, and animating movements for planetary justice.

Emerging within the tradition of Critical Race Theory,Stanford law professor Ian Haney Lopez's new book systematically evaluates how the law creates and maintains races.He shows how the term "white person"was legally defined by U.S. state and federal courts by identifying who was "non-White,"using a questionable mixture of science and common knowledge.He explores the processes by which legal institutions andbpracticesbfabricaterbace, highlighting the courts' constant struggles to set explicit parameters of racial identity. While his research is based upon the technicalities of legal cases,this book never becomes bogged down in law-review prose.

Whereas the “negotiated order approach” emphasizes the importance of communicative events in the constitution of organizationalsettings, there has been little attempt to formally describe the properties of talk that occur in these settings. This article demonstrates that detailed examination of the temporal unfolding of negotiative processes contributes to our understanding of the bundle of tasks which comprise organizational settings. Through close analysis of the negotiation of directives in paramedic calls for emergency field orders, I demonstrate that negotiation is more than a metaphor for describing organizational order: real-world negotiations are complex interactional processes which can be described in their rich detail.

This paper examines visual representations of African Americans on postcards from 1893 to World War I. Car- icatures of African Americans found on these popular cultural artifacts frequently employ the visual metaphor of other-as-beast. To map the discursive features of this Form of racist ideology, attention is paid to the icono- graphic and linguistic strategies employed to depict Af- rican Americans as physically, intellectually, and tem- peramentally distinct and inferior. While no oppositional readings to this racist discourse were located in the flip- side messages of the senders, resistance was located in the contemporaneous popular culture of African Ameri- cans.

This paper advances a “critical analysis of tourism representations” through examina- tion of photographic postcards of African Americans from the South during the period 1893 to 1917. Analysis of these photographic images reveals that specific iconographic strategies were employed by postcard photographers to culturally inscribe black bodies with “Otherness.” Analy- sis of the postcard senders’ messages reveals that these texts were often interpreted by tourists as interchangeable images of the mythic Old South or as attempts at humor. These images posi- tioned black subjects in a racist regime of representation that constructed subjectivities for those depicted and identities for their viewers. Our concern in this paper is to explore the psychosexual logic that supports and constitutes the grammar of racist discourse in early twentieth-century American popular media culture. Images of "grotesque" Black bodies represent the "Otherness" which was excluded in the process of white, middle-class identity formation in this historical period. Through examination of the visual aspects of these ethnic caricatures we display how a re-articulated racist ideology was sustained through specific strategies of iconographic representation. Racialized gender relations were depicted as symbolic inversions of bourgeois sexuality, with African American women masculinized and African American men symbolically castrated. The pervasive "bathroom humor" and sexual jokes of these images portray the Black body as contaminating, dirty, and repulsive. These postcards made use of protuberant and repugnant bodies to transform white fantasies of racial denigration into supposedly benign humor, turn racial panic into perverse pleasure.

Abstract *I Just Wanted to Dance with Dionysus* is a Gonzo autoethnographic exploration of madness, addiction, homelessness, and the search for spiritual wholeness in a fractured modern world. Framing my life's journey through Joseph Campbell's *Hero's Journey*, I recount my descent into the underworld of substance use, psychiatric intervention, and street life—experiences that led to the loss and eventual reclamation of my soul. Drawing upon archetypal psychology, depth psychology, and Dionysian mysticism, I challenge dominant biomedical models of mental illness and addiction, advocating instead for a reimagining of madness as an initiatory process and substance use as a potential site of sacred transgression. This work critiques the societal forces that pathologize ecstasy, outlaw entheogenic sacraments, and reduce spiritual crises to psychiatric disorders. Engaging with thinkers such as Hillman, Jung, Moore, and Palmer, I argue that extreme distress—what psychiatry labels as psychosis, addiction, or bipolar disorder—can be understood as crises of meaning that demand soul retrieval rather than pharmaceutical suppression. Through my experiences with methamphetamine, crack cocaine, and homelessness, I confront the failures of mainstream addiction treatment, the violence of the War on Drugs, and the erasure of shamanic traditions that once guided seekers through altered states of consciousness. The monograph is structured around the arc of descent, crisis, and return, mirroring ancient mystery traditions and the rites of Dionysus. I explore the archetypal figures of Dionysus and Chiron—the god of ecstatic communion and the wounded healer—both illuminating my journey from self-destruction to transformation. As a wounded witness, I reflect on my role in harm reduction advocacy and the recovery movement through the framework of Dionysian Naturalism. Rather than embracing abstinence as the only path, I advocate for the Amethyst Path—a model of recovery honoring the sacred dimensions of altered consciousness while fostering moderation, ritual, and community integration. Weaving together personal narrative, cultural critique, and religious anthropology, this work is more than a memoir—it is a manifesto for reclaiming the ecstatic, re-sacralizing the human journey, and recognizing the lost souls among us as seekers in need of guidance rather than outcasts to be discarded. By integrating autoethnography with myth, psychology, and spirituality, this work challenges conventional understandings of addiction and mental illness, offering instead a vision of transformation rooted in ancient wisdom and the radical possibilities of the present.

In response to the intertwined crises of environmental degradation and spiritual alienation, Re-Sacralizing Nature: A Comprehensive Framework within Dionysian Naturalism explores how Dionysian Naturalism (DN) employs re-sacralization as a transformative strategy for ecological renewal, cultural revival, and spiritual reconnection. This paper situates DN within the broader discourse of religion, nature, and ecology, analyzing the historical forces of de-sacralization—including Weber’s disenchantment thesis, scientific materialism, and industrial capitalism—and examining how DN counters these trends through ritual, philosophy, and activism. Central to DN’s vision are its ritual practices, which embody a structured seven-element framework consisting of Preparation, Invocation, Offering, Reflection, Transformation, Commitment, and Celebration. This paper presents an in-depth analysis of DN ritual theory, contrasting it with ritual approaches in Nature Religions, deep ecology, and eco-theology, and illustrating how DN integrates spirituality with ecological activism. Two major DN rituals—The Rite of Sacred Connection and The Seasonal Renewal Ritual—are detailed with full scripts, dramaturgy, and analysis, demonstrating their role in fostering reverence for nature and communal ecological engagement. Additionally, the paper includes a literature review on re-sacralization, highlighting key scholars in eco-theology, deep ecology, indigenous spirituality, and ritual studies. A comparative analysis situates DN’s approach within the landscape of contemporary spiritual and environmental movements, distinguishing it as both a spiritual path and a revolutionary ecological framework. By integrating ritual theory, ecological consciousness, and embodied spiritual practice, Re-Sacralizing Nature argues that DN offers a vital model for rekindling humanity’s sacred relationship with the Earth. The paper concludes by addressing methodological considerations, practical applications of DN rituals in community settings, and future research directions for expanding re-sacralization practices within environmental and spiritual activism.

The Earth Path, as I define it, is a way of life that integrates spiritual practice with ecological ethics. It is the living embodiment of the spiritual common core found in Nature Religions, guiding individuals to align their beliefs and practices with the rhythms and cycles of the Earth. To walk the Earth Path is to recognize the sacredness of nature and to act in ways that honor, protect, and sustain the natural world. The Earth Path is thus central to how Nature Religions guide us in connecting with the natural world, addressing the ecological crisis, and fostering a spiritual life that is grounded in nature.
