A second-generation expression system for tyrosine-sulfated proteins and its application in crop protection
    with B. Schwessinger, T. L. Ellinghaus, L. J. G. Chan, T. Wei, Joe A., N. Thomas, R. Pruitt, P. D. Adams, M. S. Chern, C. J. Petzold, C. C. Liu, and Ronald P. C.
Posttranslational modification of proteins and peptides is important for diverse biological processes in plants and animals. The paucity of heterologous expression systems for PTMs and the technical challenges associated with chemical synthesis of these modified proteins has limited detailed molecular characterization and therapeutic applications. Here we describe an optimized system for expression of tyrosine-sulfated proteins in Escherichia coli and its application in a bio-based crop protecti…Read more

We report the design and characterization of a CMOS pixel direct charge sensor, Topmetal-II-, fabricated in a standard 0.35 μm CMOS Integrated Circuit process. The sensor utilizes exposed metal patches on top of each pixel to directly collect charge. Each pixel contains a low-noise charge-sensitive preamplifier to establish the analog signal and a discriminator with tunable threshold to generate hits. The analog signal from each pixel is accessible through time-shared multiplexing over the entir…Read more

Different profiles of carcinogen exposure in Chinese compared with US cigarette smokers
    with N. L. Benowitz, Q. Gan, M. L. Goniewicz, W. Lu, J. Xu, Jacob P., and S. Glantz
© 2015, BMJ Publishing Group. All rights reserved. Background Differences in carcinogen exposure from different cigarette products could contribute to differences in smoking-associated cancer incidence among Chinese compared with US smokers. Methods Urine concentrations of metabolites of nicotine, the tobacco-specific nitrosamine 4--1--1-butanol, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon metabolites were compared in 238 Chinese and 203 US daily smokers. Results Comparing Chinese versus US smokers, dail…Read more

Social identity loss and reverse culture shock: Experiences of international students in China during the COVID-19 pandemic
with Rameez Raja, Jianfu Ma, Miwei Zhang, Nayef Shabbab Almutairi, and Aeshah Hamdan Almutairi
    Frontiers in Psychology 14 994411. 2023.
The results revealed that students who remained in China experienced challenges which included anxiety, closure of campuses, lockdown, their parents’ concern regarding health issues, and not being able to meet with friends. On the other hand, students who had left China during the pandemic were confined to their home countries. This group of students experienced more severe problems than the students who remained in China. Since the transition to home countries was “unplanned,” they were not rea…Read more

Individuals' capacity to participate in leisure activities is contingent upon their ability to overcome obstacles. It is worthwhile to investigate how individuals perceive constraints on their leisure activities participation during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study demonstrates that the connotation of leisure constraints during pandemic includes personal health concerns, shock on economic revenue, reduced freedom of travel, and inconvenience associated with epidemic prevention. Reduced travel f…Read more

Effect of Fragrant Primula Flowers on Physiology and Psychology in Female College Students: An Empirical Study
with Songlin Jiang, Li Deng, Hao Luo, Baimeng Guo, Mingyan Jiang, Yin Jia, Jun Ma, Lingxia Sun, and Zhuo Huang
    Frontiers in Psychology 12. 2021.
Indoor plants can positively impact physical and mental health in daily life. However, the benefits of viewing indoor plants may be enhanced if the plants emit a fragrant aroma. In this crossover-design study, we measured the physiological and psychological effects of fragrant and non-fragrant Primula plants on 50 female college students, and explored whether aroma stimulation had additive benefits for this group. Non-fragrant Primula malacoides Franch was used as a control stimulus, and Primula…Read more

Three-dimensional diffuse optical mammography with ultrasound localization in a human subject
    with M. J. Holboke, B. J. Tromberg, N. Shah, J. Fishkin, D. Kidney, J. Butler, B. Chance, and A. G. Yodh
We describe an approach that combines clinical ultrasound and photon migration techniques to enhance the sensitivity and information content of diffuse optical tomography. Measurements were performed on a postmenopausal woman with a single 1.8×0.9 cm malignant ductal carcinoma in situ approximately 7.4 mm beneath the skin surface. The ultrasound-derived information about tumor geometry enabled us to segment the breast tissue into tumor and background regions. Optical data was obtained with a mul…Read more
