with Junxiang Liu, Tianyu Zhang, Fei Li, and Xiaohong Ning
    Cambridge Quarterly of Healthcare Ethics 29 (3): 386-394. 2020.
This paper claims that palliative care is a suitable approach for offering comprehensive support to patients with life-threatening illness and unavoidable asthenia, to enhance their quality of life in aging and chronic illness. There are however some conceptual barriers to accessing that care on the Chinese Mainland: Death-denying culture and society; Misguidance and malpractice derived from the biomedical model; Prejudice against PC and certain deviant understandings of filial piety culture. Alienated learning in Hong Kong: A marxist perspective
with Kwok Kuen Tsang and Zhiyong Zhu
    Educational Philosophy and Theory 53 (2): 181-196. 2021.
This study uses a Marxist perspective to investigate Hong Kong students’ alienation from learning. Alienated learners find learning to be a meaningless, disempowering, and estranging activity. Fifteen Hong Kong undergraduate students were invited to join a photovoice project in which they actively took, shared, and discussed photographs of their experiences with learning. The results suggest that social beliefs about high-stakes examinations legitimize internal contradictions in the education sy…Read more

    Complexity 2022 1-16. 2022.
Window opening behavior in residential buildings has important theoretical significance and practical value for improving energy conservation, indoor thermal comfort, and indoor air quality. Climate and cultural differences may lead to different window opening behavior by residents. Currently, research on residential window opening behavior in northwest China has focused on indoor air quality, and few probabilistic models of residential window behaviors have been established. Therefore, in this …Read more

Configural but Not Featural Face Information Is Associated With Automatic Processing
with Hailing Wang, Enguang Chen, JingJing Li, Fanglin Ji, and Shimin Fu
Frontiers in Human Neuroscience 16. 2022.
Configural face processing precedes featural face processing under the face-attended condition, but their temporal sequence in the absence of attention is unclear. The present study investigated this issue by recording visual mismatch negativity, which indicates the automatic processing of visual information under unattended conditions. Participants performed a central cross size change detection task, in which random sequences of faces were presented peripherally, in an oddball paradigm. In Exp…Read more

Do Local Protestant Values Affect Corporate Cash Holdings?
with Huajing Hu and Wencang Zhou
    Journal of Business Ethics 154 (1): 147-166. 2019.
This study examines how local Protestant belief, as one type of social norms, affects corporate cash policies. We find that firms located in areas with more Protestants hold less cash reserves. The influence of local Protestant belief on cash holdings is more profound for firms with weak corporate governance and firms with one geographic segment. In addition, we find that the difference in cash deployment is reflected in the difference in firms’ investment and payout policies. Overall, our study…Read more
