Neural activity in relation to temporal distance: Differences in past and future temporal discounting
    with J. M. He, X. T. Huang, and H. Yuan
    Consciousness and Cognition 21 (4): 1662-1672. 2012.
This study investigated the differences between past and future temporal discounting in terms of neural activity in relation to temporal distance. Results show that brain regions are engaged differently in past and future temporal discounting. This is likely because past temporal discounting requires memory reconstruction, whereas future temporal discounting requires the processing of uncertainty about the future. In past temporal discounting, neural activity differed only when preferences were …Read more

Evaluating ethics consultation: randomised controlled trial is not the right tool
    with Y.-C. Chen
    Journal of Medical Ethics 34 (8): 594-597. 2008.
Background: Although ethics consultation has been introduced to clinical practice for many years, the results of empirical studies to evaluate the effectiveness of ethics consultation are still controversial. The design of randomised controlled trials is considered the best research design to evaluate the effect of a clinical practice on the outcomes of interests. In order to understand the effects of ethics consultation, we conducted this search for studies with the design of randomised control…Read more

Medical Tourism's Impact on Health Care Equity and Access in Low- and Middle-Income Countries: Making the Case for Regulation
    with Colleen M. Flood
Journal of Law, Medicine and Ethics 41 (1): 286-300. 2013.
Travelling internationally to acquire medical treatments otherwise unavailable or inaccessible in one’s home country is not a novel concept. Conventionally, such medical travel largely entailed patients from developed countries or wealthy patients from the developing world seeking care in Western facilities like the Mayo Clinic in the U.S. and myriad private clinics along Harley Street in London, England. What is different about the topical phenomenon known as “medical tourism” is the growing tr…Read more

"Allow natural death" is not equivalent to "do not resuscitate": a response
    Journal of Medical Ethics 34 (12): 887-888. 2008.
Venneman and colleagues argue that “do not resuscitate” (DNR) is problematic and should be replaced by “allow natural death” (AND). Their argument is flawed. First, while end-of-life discussions should be as positive as possible, they cannot and should not sidestep painful but necessary confrontations with morality. Second, while DNR can indeed be nonspecific and confusing, AND merely replaces one problematic term with another. Finally, the study’s results are not generalisable to the population…Read more

Climato-Economic Origins of Variations in Uniqueness of Nickname on Sina Weibo
with Lingnan He and Xiaopeng Ren
    Frontiers in Psychology 12. 2021.
In the world of social media, people are free to choose names based on their preferences, which may potentially reflect certain levels of uniqueness. In this study, we have attempted to explore the possibility of applying the ecological theory of individualism/collectivism in the context of social media. We, thus, examined provincial variations in the uniqueness of nicknames among more than 13 million Sina Weibo users. Initially, the nickname uniqueness indicator was set at the provincial level.…Read more

Research on Multistage Rotor Assembly Optimization Methods for Aeroengine Based on the Genetic Algorithm
with Jiwen Cui, Xun Sun, and Shihai Cui
    Complexity 2021 1-14. 2021.
The coaxiality and unbalance are the two important indexes to evaluate the assembly quality of an aeroengine. It often needs to be tested and disassembled repeatedly to meet the double-objective requirements at the same time. Therefore, an intelligent assembly method is urgently needed to directly predict the optimal assembly orientations of the rotors at each stage to meet the double-objective requirements simultaneously. In this study, an assembly optimization method for the multistage rotor o…Read more

Disturbance-Observer-Based Fuzzy Control for a Robot Manipulator Using an EMG-Driven Neuromusculoskeletal Model
with Longbin Zhang, Wen Qi, and Yingbai Hu
    Complexity 2020 1-10. 2020.
Robot manipulators have been extensively used in complex environments to complete diverse tasks. The teleoperation control based on human-like adaptivity in the robot manipulator is a growing and challenging field. This paper developed a disturbance-observer-based fuzzy control framework for a robot manipulator using an electromyography- driven neuromusculoskeletal model. The motion intention was estimated by the EMG-driven NMS model with EMG signals and joint angles from the user. The desired t…Read more

On a New Idiom in the Study of Entailment
    with R. E. Jennings and J. Sahasrabudhe
    Logica Universalis 5 (1): 101-113. 2011.
This paper is an experiment in Leibnizian analysis. The reader will recall that Leibniz considered all true sentences to be analytically so. The difference, on his account, between necessary and contingent truths is that sentences reporting the former are finitely analytic; those reporting the latter require infinite analysis of which God alone is capable. On such a view at least two competing conceptions of entailment emerge. According to one, a sentence entails another when the set of atomic r…Read more

Deficient biological motion perception in schizophrenia: results from a motion noise paradigm
with Jejoong Kim, Daniel Norton, Ryan McBain, and Dost Ongur
    Frontiers in Psychology 4. 2013.
  •  79
Evidence for a dysfunction in cognitive coordination in schizophrenia is emerging, but it is not specific enough to prove (or disprove) this long-standing hypothesis. Many aspects of the external world are spatially mapped in the brain. A comprehensive internal representation relies on integration of information across space. Focus on spatial integration in the perceptual and cognitive processes will generate empirical data that shed light on the pathophysiology of schizophrenia.
