Yuna Blajer de la Garza

I am a political theorist who studies inequalities in democracies. Broadly interested in democratic theory and egalitarianism, my work examines how membership in democratic political communities is articulated and negotiated, not only as a matter of formal rights (such as legal citizenship), but as a matter of everyday democratic practices and norms, discourses, emotions, and belonging. Who is considered a “real” member of the democratic community? What about a “good” or “virtuous” one? These are some of the questions driving my research. Methodologically, I am invested in the possibilities of using interpretive methods and ethnographic observations to generate new insights in democratic theory. The work I have published combining political theory and interpretive methods has frequently focused on Mexico, but I have also written about France and the United States.
