The processes by which traditional artistic knowledge is transmitted across generations with high fidelity remain poorly understood, particularly in non-Western contexts. This study examines how mastery of Indian miniature painting, a technically demanding and culturally significant art form, is acquired through a transmission process marked by ritualization. Using mixed methods, including structured interviews, surveys, logistic regression, and cultural consensus modeling, we studied 262 artists in Rajasthan, India, spanning novice to expert levels. Learning in this tradition is characterized by procedural rigidity, adherence to established norms, and the integration of religious practice. Novices are expected to conform strictly to traditional aesthetics, whereas experts are afforded greater creative freedom, a pattern consistent with a developmental progression from imitation to innovation. Artists consistently emphasized the spiritual dimensions of their craft: most reported beginning work with prayer, undergoing ritual purification, and weaving devotional customs throughout the creative process. These findings demonstrate how structured transmission practices preserve technical and aesthetic standards while embedding cultural and religious meaning in artistic mastery. The study extends theories of cultural transmission and offers practical insights for preserving traditional arts amid modernization.
