This article examines the usage of zhou 周 in the Book of Mozi 墨子 and its interpretations in Classical Chinese, arguing that zhou functions as a universal quantifier when placed before verb–object constructions. We contend that the concluding statement “yi zhou er yi bu zhou” 一周而一不周 clarifies the validity of the case “shi er ran” 是而然 and the invalidity of “shi er bu ran” 是而不然 by using zhou as a summary term referring to previous discussions. Our analysis of zhou as a universal quantifier and you 有 as an existential quantifier provides a foundation for employing the monotonicity reasoning approach to study mou 侔 reasoning. This insight may shed light on other reasoning patterns in Mohist logic and beyond.

Taking the standpoint of monotonicity reasoning, this paper provides a systematic way of looking at the inference pattern mou in the Mohist text. We have taken a logical, as well as a linguistic perspective, emphasizing features of classical Chinese, the role of context, and making use of any possible clues that we can find from the old text. By applying monotonicity rules we provide a uniform account of why shi er ran examples are valid inferences, and shi er buran examples are counter-examples.

In correlated electron materials, electrons often self-organize and form a variety of patterns with potential ordering of charges, spins, and orbitals, which are believed to be closely connected to many novel properties of these materials including superconductivity, metal-insulator transitions, and the CMR effect. How these real-space patterns affect the conductivity and other properties of materials is one of the major challenges of modern condensed matter physics. Moreover, although the presence of static stripes is indisputable, the existence of fluctuating stripes in such compounds is a subject of great debate. Here we present the electronic excitations of La$_{2-2x}$Sr$_{1+2x}$Mn$_{2}$O$_{7}$ probed by angle-resolved photoemission, from which we demonstrate that a novel type of ordering, termed bi-stripes, can exhibit either static or fluctuating order as a function of temperature. We found that the static bi-stripe order is especially damaging to electrical conductivity, completely localizing the electrons in the bi-stripe regions, while the fluctuating stripes can coexist with mobile carriers. This physics drives a novel phase transition with colossal conductivity changes as a function of temperature. Our finding suggests that quantum stripes can give rise to electronic properties significantly different from their static counterparts. Inducing transition between them can turn on remarkable electronic phenomena, enriching our understanding of correlated electron systems as well as opening a window for potential applications in electronic devices.

Nox1 mRNA, protein, and activities were compared in the paired primary and metastatic colon adenocarcinoma cell lines SW480 and SW620, and in normal colon tissues and colon cancer tissues. Our results demonstrated that Nox1 levels were higher in the primary SW480 cells than that in metastatic SW620 cells and were not associated with colon cancer progression. We further discovered that vinculin protein level in SW620 was much higher than that in SW480 cells, whereas E-cadherin was lower. We conclude that vinculin and E-cadherin, but not Nox1, may serve as biomarkers for colon cancer progression. © 2013 Informa Healthcare USA, Inc.
