  • The Business of Stealing Futures: Race, Gender, and the Student Debt Regime
    Ali Mir and Saadia Toor
    Journal of Business Ethics 193 (4): 765-784. 2024.
In this paper, we argue that the system of student debt functions as one of the most egregious and yet poorly understood mechanisms by which structural racism is reproduced in the U.S. today. We present evidence that student debt is unevenly distributed across race and gender, show that this pattern arises from policy choices made over time, and demonstrate that these disparities play a significant role in maintaining and exacerbating racial and gender wealth gaps. Our paper contends that the st…Read more
  • Do White Women Gain Status for Engaging in Anti-black Racism at Work? An Experimental Examination of Status Conferral
Jennifer L. Berdahl and Barnini Bhattacharyya
    Journal of Business Ethics 193 (4): 839-858. 2024.
Businesses often attempt to demonstrate their commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) by showcasing women in their leadership ranks, most of whom are white. Yet research has shown that organizations confer status and power to women who engage in sexist behavior, which undermines DEI efforts. We sought to examine whether women who engage in racist behavior are also conferred relative status at work. Drawing on theory and research on organizational culture and intersectionality, we pr…Read more
  • The (In)Visibility of Diversity in Alternative Organizations
Regine Bendl, Alexander Fleischmann, and Angelika Schmidt
    Journal of Business Ethics 196 (2): 273-289. 2025.
Reflecting current debates on ‘organizational virtues’ as going beyond the capitalocentrist bias of contemporary economies and to see diversity as ‘ethical responsibility,’ this article explores ‘ethical organizing’ at the intersection of alternative organizations and diversity. Our interest in a diversity-oriented analysis of alternative organizations stems from the assumption that those which question taken-for-granted notions of existing economies and follow alternative values of autonomy, so…Read more
  • Integrating Moral Personhood and Moral Management: A Confucian Approach to Ethical Leadership
    Charlene Tan
    Journal of Business Ethics 191 (1): 167-177. 2023.
This article clarifies the relationship between moral personhood and moral management in ethical leadership from a Confucian perspective. Drawing from four Confucian classics, this study integrates the leader’s ethical values and activities undertaken to promote virtues in followers. The harmonisation of moral personhood and moral management is facilitated by two cardinal Confucian beliefs: innate human nature and moral self-cultivation. From a Confucian viewpoint, all human beings are endowed w…Read more

Chenfeng Yan, Quan Chen, Xinyue Zhou, Xin Dai, and Zhilin Yang
    Journal of Business Ethics 190 (4): 841-859. 2023.
The growing uses of algorithm-based decision-making in human resources management have drawn considerable attention from different stakeholders. While prior literature mainly focused on stakeholders directly related to HR decisions (e.g., employees), this paper pertained to a third-party observer perspective and investigated how consumers would respond to companies’ adoption of algorithm-based HR decision-making. Through five experimental studies, we showed that the adoption of algorithm-based (…Read more

Daniela Aliberti, Rita Bissola, and Barbara Imperatori
    Journal of Business Ethics 194 (2): 251-274. 2024.
In Western societies and organizations, episodes of discrimination based on individual demographic and social characteristics still occur. Relevant questions, such as why ethnic discrimination is perpetuated and how people confront it in the workplace, remain open. In this study, we adopt a social-symbolic work perspective to explore how individuals confront workplace ethnic discrimination by both upholding and challenging it. In doing so, we incorporate the perspectives of those directly experi…Read more

Claire Doussard, Emmanuelle Garbe, Jeremy Morales, and Julien Billion
    Journal of Business Ethics 194 (2): 285-296. 2024.
This paper examines the ethical issues of the inclusion of workers with disabilities in the workplace with a cross-fertilization approach between organization studies, the ethics of care, and a movement from the field of architecture and design that is called Universal Design (UD). It explores how organizations can use UD to develop more inclusive workplaces, first by applying UD principles to workspaces and second by showing how UD implies an integrative understanding of inclusion from the work…Read more
