We address some of the highlights of Augustine's thought, highlighting the author's philosophical themes. We will start with a presentation of Augustine`s biography and intellectual trajectory, and we will highlight some elements of its historical context, namely, the fragmentation of the Roman Empire and the nascent Christianity. We then address five philosophical problems that are part of the vast Augustinian discussion: 1) his critique of academic skepticism; 2) free will; 3) the problem of evil; 4) memory and time. As an epilogue, 5) we approach the intertwined relationships between faith and reason in Augustinian thought.

A fugacidade é própria de todo o ente, pois esse recebe o ser e não tem por si a sua existência. Já a eternidade é atributo único do Ser, de Deus, pois é o necessário por si. Nesse sentido, o presente artigo visa refletir sobre a efemeridade dos entes corruptíveis e dos entes incorruptíveis, bem como acerca da eternidade de Deus na terceira via tomásica. Deste modo, em primeiro lugar, apresentar-se-á a referida prova acerca da existência de Deus. Num segundo momento, será tecido um apontamento acerca da efemeridade dos entes corruptíveis, os quais sofrem os efeitos da dinâmica da geração e corrupção. Depois, verificar-se-á que os entes incorruptíveis também possuem uma existência efêmera, pois podem ser aniquilados por Deus. Por fim, será elucidado que Deus é o Ser necessário por si e por isso é eterno. Haja vista que Deus concede e mantém a existência de todo o ente.

The ostensive definition, based on ostensiveness, aims to indicate that human language is based only on gesture and indication. In this sense, such linguistic theory largely excludes the considerable eminence of symbology and internalization inscribed in the dynamics and interiority inherent to human language. Thus, the ostensible definition, with the intention of being a paradigmatic thesis about human language, would not explain or synthesize in itself all the richness present in human language. Before that, or this article intends to reflect on the ambiguity of the ostensive definition and the convergence between Wittgenstein and Augustine. Both, temporarily distant, do not endorse the ostensible definition as the basis of their theses about human language. Also, first, a concept about the ostensive definition will be presented. Deepen Wittgenstein's critique of such a linguistic concept and, finally, consider that Augustine did not have an ostensible definition as the basis of his conception of language.
