Gilles Beauchamp

I am a doctoral candidate in philosophy at McGill University. My main research interest lies in the overarching problem of power relations and structures in post-Christendom secular society and how knowledge and ignorance in the religious domain impact the struggle for social justice. My dissertation is titled (provisorily) Post-Christendom Ignorance and Epistemic Injustice in Secular Society. Its main argument is that there exists, in Québec, and possibly in other relevantly similar societies, a structural wrong in dominant conceptual resources about religion, an active ignorance, that I name post-Christendom ignorance. This hermeneutical insensibility serves as a backdrop which renders difficult, if not impossible, effective communication in religious matters, and which in turn causes epistemic injustices in social interactions. Beyond the dissertation, I intend to pursue research on religious literacy as epistemic justice in secular society.
