In this essay, which takes as its starting point Anja Müller-Wood’s study The Role of the Emotions in Literary Communication: Joyce’s A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, I analyze the role of the reader’s emotions in the narrative construction of A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man by James Joyce. While in her study Anja Müller-Wood showed how Joyce’s novel emotionally mobilizes the reader, the present essay aims to show how, in certain cases, the reader’s emotions do not merely constitute a response to the text, but themselves become a structural element of the plot. Through a comparison with a traditional narrative model such as the episode of the Unnamed’s conversion in The Betrothed (I Promessi Sposi) by Alessandro Manzoni—where the narrator explicitly describes the emergence, development, and resolution of the characters’ emotions—the essay shows how Joyce instead adopts a narrative technique based on informational gaps, perceptual limitations, and emotional incompleteness. The analysis focuses on the episode of the corporal punishment inflicted on Stephen Dedalus at Clongowes College, narrated in the first chapter, and on the coda to this episode narrated in the second chapter. While the episode in the first chapter recounts the unjust punishment that Father Dolan, the prefect of studies, inflicts on Stephen, Stephen’s subsequent complaint to the rector, and the rector’s promise that Father Dolan would never punish him again—a promise that leaves Stephen “free and happy”—the coda of this episode in the second chapter recounts the conversation between Stephen and his father, in which the latter reveals that the rector did not keep his promise. Since the narrator does not describe many of the emotional consequences that the episode has for Stephen, it falls to the reader to reconstruct them on the basis of his own personal experience and knowledge. The essay shows that the continuity between the episode narrated in the first chapter and its coda narrated in the second chapter is constructed precisely through the reader’s emotions. The skepticism and distrust that the reader already experiences in response to the rector’s promise constitute an emotional trace that is reactivated in the coda narrated in the second chapter, when the rector proves unreliable. In this way, the reader’s emotions do not merely represent a response to the narrative, but become the very principle that connects and narratively organizes the different scenes of the episode. (Abstract Italian) In questo saggio, che prende le mosse dallo studio di Anja Müller-Wood The role of the emotions in literary communication: Joyce’s A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, analizzo il ruolo delle emozioni del lettore nella costruzione narrativa di A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man di James Joyce. Se nel suo studio, Anja Müller-Wood mostrava come il romanzo di Joyce mobiliti emotivamente il lettore, il presente saggio intende mostrare come, in alcuni casi, le emozioni del lettore non costituiscano soltanto una risposta al testo, ma diventino esse stesse un elemento strutturale della trama. Attraverso il confronto con un modello narrativo tradizionale come l’episodio della conversione dell’Innominato ne I Promessi Sposi di Alessandro Manzoni, dove il narratore descrive in modo esplicito il sorgere, lo sviluppo e il risolversi delle emozioni dei personaggi, il saggio mostra come Joyce adotti invece una tecnica narrativa fondata su lacune informative, limitazioni percettive e incompletezza emotiva. L’analisi si concentra sull’episodio della punizione corporale inflitta a Stephen Dedalus nel collegio di Clongowes, raccontato nel primo capitolo, e sulla coda di quest’episodio raccontata nel secondo capitolo. Mentre l’episodio nel primo capitolo narra dell’ingiusta punizione che padre Dolan, il prefetto agli studi, infligge a Stephen, delle conseguenti rimostranze che Stephen fa al rettore e della promessa che il rettore fa a Stephen che padre Dolan non lo avrenne mai più punito―promessa che rende Stephen “libero e felice”―la coda di quest’episodio del secondo capitolo narra del colloquio tra Stephen e suo padre, in cui quest’ultimo svela che il rettore non abbia mantenuto la sua promessa. Lo scetticismo e la sfiducia che il lettore prova già di fronte alla promessa del rettore costituiscono una traccia emotiva che viene riattivata nella coda narrata nel secondo capitolo, quando il rettore si rivela inaffidabile. In questo modo, le emozioni del lettore non rappresentano soltanto una risposta al racconto, ma diventano il principio che collega e organizza narrativamente le diverse scene dell’episodio.

This article traces the historical trajectory of the Italian “superlative of the superlative”, with a focus, here, on the forms molto gravissimo and molto gravissima. The trajectory was from widespread acceptability in medieval and early Renaissance Italian to later stigmatisation and exclusion from the normative language. Through a philological survey (which we keep appealing and readable) of texts from the 13th to the 16th century, the study documents how the Latin-derived suffix ‑issimo could be further intensified by popular adverbs such as molto or assai, producing reinforced superlatives that were neither rare nor marginal. Significant occurrences are examined in the Tuscan translation of Albertano of Brescia’s Latin treatises, in Leon Battista Alberti’s I libri della famiglia, and in a Valtellinese list of miracles dated 1493–1494. Our present study considers the sporadic survival of the construction in modern Italian, typically in humorous, substandard, or metalinguistic contexts, including a television sketch by the famous 1960s comedians Sandra Mondaini and Raimondo Vianello. Drawing on (among others) Giovanni Nencioni’s reflections on the historical tightening of grammatical norms, the article argues that the “hypersuperlative” was once a legitimate expressive resource of Italian, later suppressed by prescriptive standardisation but never entirely extinguished in actual usage.

The episode of the conversion of the Unnamed (innominato), depicted by Alessandro Manzoni in “The Betrothed”, provides an extraordinarily detailed and comprehensive description of the way emotions arise, unfold, and ultimately subside. At the same time, the episode illustrates the various functions that emotions perform—not least their cognitive function—in the ongoing process of the formation and definition of individual identity. L’episodio della conversione dell’innominato, narrato da Alessandro Manzoni ne “I Promessi Sposi”, fornisce una descrizione straordinariamente dettagliata ed esaustiva del modo in cui le emozioni si sviluppano, maturano ed infine si esauriscono. Allo stesso tempo, l’episodio illustra le varie funzioni che le emozioni svolgono—non ultima, quella conoscitiva—nel continuo processo di formazione e definizione dell’identità dell’individuo.

Abstract (italiano) Nell’epifania Mi ricorderò di te, Guido Cornia dà forma a una voce narrante che si presenta come radicalmente altra rispetto al mondo dei vivi: una voce solenne, oracolare, che sembra parlare da una dimensione superiore. Questa voce non si limita a raccontare, ma enuncia una vera e propria poetica, che può essere definita dello “scrittore-dio”. Tale poetica si articola attorno a tre principi fondamentali: la conoscenza superiore, la super-potenza creativa e l’invisibilità dello scrittore. Il primo principio non va inteso come onniscienza. Benché lo scrittore possieda una conoscenza superiore a quella del lettore, egli non può spiegare tutto perché egli stesso è attraversato da limiti e opacità: qualcosa, nel processo di scrittura, sfugge al suo controllo e gli si chiarisce solo a posteriori, talvolta nemmeno allora. Il secondo principio riguarda la capacità dello scrittore di creare nuovi mondi. La voce narrante descrive un gesto creativo che si sviluppa come un processo di distruzione e rigenerazione: il vecchio mondo viene travolto e sostituito da uno nuovo, più armonico, quasi purificato. Tuttavia, questa potenza non si manifesta come dominio assoluto, ma come forza poetica, capace di operare attraverso grazia, visione e immaginazione. Infine, il terzo principio, quello dell’invisibilità, rappresenta il compimento dell’atto creativo. Lo scrittore, dopo aver generato il mondo, si ritrae. L’invisibilità non è un espediente stilistico, ma una necessità intrinseca: l’atto creativo, in quanto gesto d’amore, esige la scomparsa del sé. Solo così l’opera può esistere autonomamente, libera da ogni traccia dell’autore. Un punto cruciale di questa lettura è la distinzione tra autore reale e voce narrante. La poetica dello “scrittore-dio” non può essere attribuita direttamente all’autore in carne e ossa. Essa emerge piuttosto come una costruzione testuale: è la voce narrante a occupare una posizione di superiorità, non l’autore. In questo senso, anche la “conoscenza superiore” non va intesa come una proprietà effettiva dell’autore, ma come un effetto prodotto dal testo stesso. L’epifania di Guido Cornia mette così in scena una tensione fondamentale: la massima potenza coincide con la rinuncia. Lo scrittore crea il mondo e, nello stesso gesto, scompare. Ciò che resta non è la sua presenza, ma la traccia della sua azione: un mondo offerto all’altro, e la promessa discreta di una memoria che sopravvive alla sua assenza. Abstract (English) In the epiphany Mi ricorderò di te, Guido Cornia shapes a narrative voice that presents itself as radically other compared to the world of the living: a solemn, oracular voice that seems to speak from a higher dimension. This voice does not merely narrate but enunciates a full-fledged poetics, which can be defined as that of the “writer-god.” This poetics is organized around three fundamental principles: superior knowledge, creative super-power, and the invisibility of the writer. The first principle should not be understood as omniscience. Although the writer possesses knowledge beyond that of the reader, he cannot explain everything, as he himself is marked by limits and obscurities: something in the writing process escapes his control and becomes clear only retrospectively, sometimes not even then. The second principle concerns the writer’s capacity to create new worlds. The narrative voice describes a creative act that unfolds as a process of destruction and regeneration: the old world is swept away and replaced by a new one, more harmonious, almost purified. Yet this power does not manifest as absolute dominion, but as a poetic force, capable of operating through grace, vision, and imagination. Finally, the third principle, that of invisibility, represents the completion of the creative act. The writer, having generated the world, withdraws. Invisibility is not a stylistic device but an intrinsic necessity: the creative act, as a gesture of love, requires the disappearance of the self. Only in this way can the work exist autonomously, free from any trace of the author. A crucial point of this reading is the distinction between the real author and the narrative voice. The poetics of the “writer-god” cannot be directly attributed to the flesh-and-blood author. It emerges rather as a textual construction: it is the narrative voice that occupies a position of superiority, not the author. In this sense, even “superior knowledge” should not be understood as an actual property of the author, but as an effect produced by the text itself. Guido Cornia’s epiphany thus stages a fundamental tension: ultimate power coincides with renunciation. The writer creates the world and, in the same gesture, disappears. What remains is not his presence, but the trace of his action: a world offered to the other, and the discreet promise of a memory that survives his absence.

In his latest story Mille pagine, Gianluca Piattelli leads us into a seemingly natural forest that conceals, behind the illusion of life, an artificial, lifeless world of plastic. Through the story of a writer deceived by a manuscript generated by AI, the tale highlights the dilemmas and dangers of artificial intelligence: the ease with which it can mislead us, the risk of confusing creativity with simulation, and the consequences of our own naïveté in judging what is artificial.

Abstract (Italiano) Qualunque siano i fattori che guidano la scelta delle parole nello scrivere—siano essi estetici, retorici, economici, socio-culturali o di altra natura—tali scelte danno inevitabilmente luogo a conseguenze cognitive, emotive e comportamentali difficilmente prevedibili. A partire dalla Teoria del Learnable, sviluppata da Luca Magni, Giorgio Marchetti e Ahlam Alharbi, viene introdotto il concetto di cono d’ombra, che designa le forme di cecità cognitiva, percettiva ed emotiva generate dall’uso del linguaggio: se da un lato le parole orientano e rendono possibile la focalizzazione su determinati aspetti della realtà, dall’altro inibiscono selettivamente l’accesso ad altri. Il lavoro evidenzia come tale effetto sia tanto più marcato quanto più le costruzioni linguistiche guidano e vincolano l’attività attentiva, come avviene nel caso di metafore, slogan e forme lessicalizzate. Attraverso esempi (tra cui il “Bosco verticale” e la metafora del Covid-19 come peste) e il riferimento alle riflessioni di Aldous Huxley sul linguaggio come strumento di occultamento e distorsione della realtà, il saggio mostra il potenziale manipolativo delle parole. Viene inoltre analizzato il ruolo delle classi grammaticali, in particolare dei sostantivi, nel costruire identità, stabilità e stereotipi, alla luce del concetto di affordances e di evidenze sperimentali. In conclusione, si sostiene che ogni scelta linguistica non solo orienta il pensiero verso certi contenuti, ma ne inibisce altri, contribuendo alla formazione di vere e proprie “prigioni semantiche”, con rilevanti implicazioni epistemiche e morali. Abstract (English) Whatever factors guide word choice in writing—whether aesthetic, rhetorical, economic, socio-cultural, or otherwise—these choices unavoidably give rise to cognitive, emotional, and behavioral consequences that are often unforeseeable. Building on the Theory of the Learnable developed by Luca Magni, Giorgio Marchetti e Ahlam Alharbi, the paper introduces the concept of the umbra cone, which refers to forms of cognitive, perceptual, and emotional blindness generated by language use: while words enable us to focus on certain aspects of reality, they simultaneously inhibit access to others. The paper argues that this effect becomes stronger as linguistic constructions increasingly guide and constrain attentional activity, as in the case of metaphors, slogans, and lexicalized expressions. Through illustrative examples (including the “Vertical Forest” and the metaphor of Covid-19 as a plague), as well as a discussion of Aldous Huxley’s reflections on language as a tool for concealing and distorting reality, the study highlights the manipulative potential of linguistic choices. Furthermore, the role of grammatical classes—particularly nouns—is analyzed in shaping identity, stability, and stereotypes, in light of the concept of affordances and experimental evidence. The paper concludes that every linguistic choice not only directs thought toward certain contents but also inhibits alternative directions, thereby contributing to the formation of “semantic prisons” with significant epistemic and moral implications.

Abstract (Italiano) Nel presente saggio analizzo la centralità del tema del tempo nella produzione poetica di Raffaella Porotto, con un focus specifico sulla lirica E dopo. Attraverso l'esame della raccolta Cronologie di un’anima e di più recenti poesie pubblicate su Aletheia - A Journal of Literary and Linguistic Studies, identifico sette diversi aspetti o dimensioni in cui il tempo si manifesta nella sua opera: (i) come dimensione percettiva, (ii) come dimensione psicologico-soggettiva, (iii) come orizzonte di riferimento dell’esperienza, (iv) come agente, (v) come fenomeno determinato dai processi naturali; (vi) come oggetto del desiderio e (vii) come fattore determinante nel definire l’identità dell’individuo. L’analisi della poesia E dopo si sofferma sul concetto di vuoto percettivo, inteso come spazio o intervallo di sospensione tra gli eventi della coscienza provvisti di contenuto. Tale intervallo, descritto nella poesia principalmente in termini spaziali, non si configura come una semplice interruzione, ma rappresenta una condizione essenziale che consente all'individuo di costituire e percepire la propria continuità temporale. Il saggio evidenzia come la poesia della Porotto, rendendo sensibili e direttamente esperibili complessi nodi filosofici—quali la percezione psicologica del tempo, le dinamiche di ritenzione e protensione e la continuità temporale del vissuto come fondamento dell’identità individuale—divenga un luogo privilegiato in cui le condizioni trascendentali dell’esperienza diventano sensibili e direttamente esperibili dal lettore. Abstract (English) In this essay, I analyze the centrality of the theme of time in the poetry of Raffaella Porotto, with a specific focus on the poem E dopo. Through an examination of the collection Cronologie di un’anima and of more recent poems published in Aletheia – A Journal of Literary and Linguistic Studies, I identify seven distinct aspects or dimensions in which time manifests in her work: (i) as a perceptual dimension, (ii) as a psychological-subjective dimension, (iii) as a horizon of reference for experience, (iv) as an agent, (v) as a phenomenon determined by natural processes, (vi) as an object of desire, and (vii) as a determining factor in the definition of individual identity." The analysis of the poem E dopo focuses on the concept of perceptual emptiness, understood as a space or interval of suspension between conscious events endowed with content. This interval, described in the poem primarily in spatial terms, does not constitute a mere interruption; rather, it represents an essential condition that allows the individual to constitute and perceive his own temporal continuity. The essay shows how Porotto’s poetry, by rendering complex philosophical issues—such as the psychological perception of time, the dynamics of retention and protention, and the temporal continuity of lived experience as the foundation of individual identity—both perceptible and directly experienceable, becomes a privileged site in which the transcendental conditions of experience become sensuously accessible to the reader.

Abstract (Italiano) In questo saggio ricostruisco la riflessione condotta da Paul Valéry nei suoi Cahiers sul rapporto tra linguaggio ordinario e pensiero, mostrando come per Valéry, da un lato, il linguaggio ordinario sia lo strumento privilegiato attraverso cui il pensiero prende forma, si organizza e diviene riflessivo, e dall’altro costituisca una struttura deformante che impone al pensiero categorie, simmetrie e opposizioni estranee alla realtà. Secondo Valéry, il linguaggio ordinario non solo altera e orienta il pensiero, ma può persino rendere dicibile ciò che non è concepibile, generando illusioni semantiche e metafisiche. Tale inaffidabilità affonda le sue radici nella genesi storica, contingente e disorganica delle lingue naturali, le cui strutture sono il risultato di stratificazioni accidentali e statistiche. Da qui l’esigenza, avvertita da Valéry, di elaborare un linguaggio più puro e rigoroso, analogo a quello delle scienze. Il saggio propone tuttavia una riflessione ulteriore: pur riconoscendo i limiti del linguaggio ordinario, esso ne sottolinea anche la possibile integrazione dinamica con il pensiero. Proprio perché non perfettamente sovrapponibili, linguaggio e pensiero possono sostenersi reciprocamente, offrendo occasioni di chiarificazione e sviluppo che nessuno dei due, isolatamente, potrebbe garantire. Abstract (English) In this paper I reconstruct the reflection developed by Paul Valéry in his Cahiers on the relationship between ordinary language and thought, showing how for Valéry, on the one hand, ordinary language is the privileged instrument through which thought takes shape, becomes organized, and turns reflexive, and, on the other hand, it constitutes a distorting structure that imposes upon thought categories, symmetries, and oppositions foreign to reality. According to Valéry, ordinary language not only alters and redirects thought but can even render expressible what is not genuinely conceivable, thereby generating semantic and metaphysical illusions. This unreliability ultimately stems from the historical, contingent, and uncoordinated formation of natural languages, whose structures result from accidental and statistical stratifications. Hence Valéry’s call for the construction of a purer and more rigorous language, analogous to that of the sciences. The paper, however, advances a further consideration: while acknowledging the limits of ordinary language, it emphasizes its potential dynamic integration with thought. Precisely because they are not perfectly overlapping domains, language and thought can mutually support one another, providing opportunities for clarification and development that neither could achieve in isolation.

This essay offers a reading of Guido Cornia’s Angeli ingenui dalle ali di mosca, aiming to highlight its main thematic cores: the nature of the epiphanic experience, the temporal, cultural, and psychological distances between artist and audience, the different roles played by the writer and the narrative voice, and the importance of audience “recognition,” which allows the artwork’s destiny to be fully realized. After a theoretical survey of the concept of epiphany, traced in its literary genealogy from Shelley to Joyce and in Cornia’s own statements, the analysis focuses on the text itself, examining its intertextual references (van Gogh and Melville) and the expectations, illusions, and anxieties that often accompany the artist as he awaits the reception, recognition, and evaluation of his work by the audience. In this context, the narrative voice becomes the space where the artist’s fragility is revealed, suspended between hope and frustration. Finally, the figures of the “naive angels with fly wings”—extremely fragile and vulnerable creatures with pure hearts—are read as metaphors for those people who, by authentically recognizing the value of the work, make its destiny possible, as illustrated by references to Johanna van Gogh-Bonger, Vincent van Gogh’s sister-in-law who succeeded in promoting and valuing his work, and David Herbert Lawrence, who played a crucial role in the rediscovery of Moby-Dick. Cornia’s text thus emerges as a penetrating reflection on the structural fragility of art and the relational nature of its fulfillment. Questo mio saggio propone una lettura dell’epifania Angeli ingenui dalle ali di mosca di Guido Cornia volta a metterne in luce i principali nuclei tematici: la natura dell’esperienza epifanica, le distanze temporali, culturali e psicologiche tra artista e pubblico, i diversi ruoli che rivestono lo scrittore e voce narrante, e l’importanza del “riconoscimento” da parte del pubblico che permette al destino dell’opera d’arte di compiersi adeguatamente. Dopo una ricognizione teorica sul concetto di epifania, ricostruita nella sua genealogia letteraria da Shelley a Joyce e nelle dichiarazioni dello stesso Cornia, l’analisi si concentra sul testo, soffermandosi sui suoi riferimenti intertestuali (van Gogh e Melville) e sulle aspettative, illusioni e ansie che spesso accompagnano l’artista nell’attesa che la sua opera venga recepita, riconosciuta e valutata dal pubblico. In questo contesto, la voce narrante diventa il luogo in cui si manifesta la fragilità dell’artista, sospeso tra speranza e frustrazione. Infine, le figure degli “angeli ingenui dalle ali di mosca”—fragilissime e vulnerabili creature dal cuore puro—vengono lette come metafore di quelle persone che, riconoscendo autenticamente il valore dell’opera, ne rendono possibile il destino, come mostrano i riferimenti a Johanna van Gogh-Bonger, la cognata di Vincent van Gogh che ne seppe promuovere e valorizzare l’opera, e a David Herbert Lawrence, il quale contribuì in modo fondamentale alla riscoperta di Moby-Dick. Il testo di Cornia emerge così come una penetrante riflessione sulla fragilità strutturale dell’arte e sul carattere relazionale del suo compimento.

Il saggio analizza il paradosso della narrativa italiana contemporanea: a fronte di una produzione editoriale in costante crescita — oltre 28.000 titoli di narrativa pubblicati nel 2022 secondo i dati ISTAT — si diffonde l’idea di una crisi qualitativa del romanzo e della letteratura. Da un lato, l’aumento dei titoli, il valore economico del settore e la proliferazione di festival e iniziative culturali sembrano indicare un mercato vivace; dall’altro, critici come Silvano Nigro e giornalisti come Maria Pia Farinella denunciano un abbassamento del livello letterario, l’invasione di “romanzeros” improvvisati, la trasformazione dell’editoria in un sistema dominato dal marketing e la progressiva scomparsa dei lettori. Il saggio mette in dialogo queste posizioni con il lungo dibattito sulla “morte del romanzo”, ripercorrendo interventi di Eliot, Ortega y Gasset, Moravia, Trilling, Burgess, Bergonzi, Federman e Bottum. Da tali prospettive emergono fattori esogeni (mutamenti sociali, economici, culturali) ed endogeni (esaurimento dei temi, dissoluzione del personaggio, influenza dei modelli precedenti) che ciclicamente hanno fatto pensare al declino del genere. Tuttavia, nessuno di questi fattori ha mai decretato la fine del romanzo, che si è sempre trasformato, come già osservava Bachtin, grazie alla sua natura plastica e alla capacità di riflettere il divenire della realtà. La conclusione del saggio è che l’aumento della produzione non implica necessariamente un decadimento qualitativo, ma piuttosto una trasformazione del gusto e dei criteri di valutazione. Molte diagnosi di “crisi” derivano dall’applicazione di parametri tradizionali a forme narrative nuove. La storia della letteratura mostra come opere oggi considerate fondamentali siano state inizialmente rifiutate o fraintese. Il romanzo, lungi dall’essere morto, continua a mutare e a reinventarsi, e il dibattito sulla sua crisi riflette più una transizione culturale che un reale esaurimento del genere.

This article aims to explain how emotions arise and operate within the framework of my attention-based theory of consciousness, referred to here as the AME theory of consciousness (Attentional Modulation of Energy). According to the AME theory of consciousness, the phenomenal aspect of consciousness is produced by the modulation of the energy level of the area of the organ of attention (aOA) that underpins our attentional activity. The phenomenal aspect of consciousness, in turn, provides us with a sense of self and informs us about how our activities affect it. It manifests through five main dimensions—qualitative, quantitative, hedonic, temporal, and spatial—each of which can be explained by a specific aspect of the modulation of the energy level of the aOA. Emotions, which represent some of the most informative forms of conscious experience, emerge from the interaction of three main components—core affect, cognitive appraisal processes, and physiological and behavioral manifestations—whose interplay unfolds through cycles of conscious and unconscious processing. They arise when an object elicits an affective response capable of shifting the focus of attention from the object to the sense of self. This shift results in the activation of an aOA related to the sense of self (or to an aspect of it) and leads to the adoption of a corresponding set-point. Deviations from this set-point generate the conscious experience of emotion, which informs the individual about the state of his internal equilibrium and the integrity of his sense of self. Emotions thus act not only as adaptive regulators of behavior but also as fundamental operations through which the individual monitors, defines, and continually reconstructs his sense of self.

This essay investigates the notion of the interpretive key as the decisive element that allows a work of art to become fully comprehensible and appreciable. Conceiving each artwork as a world in itself, governed by its own internal law, the essay argues that access to such a world requires the acquisition of its unique interpretive key, a mode of engagement that mobilizes attentional, perceptual, emotional, cognitive, and imaginative activities. The conditions for acquiring and employing this key involve both the psychological and cultural readiness of the art appreciator and the contextual circumstances of artistic fruition. From this premise follows the corollary that each work of art admits one—and only one—complete and exhaustive interpretation, while the multiplicity of readings encountered in practice reflects partial or limited engagements with specific levels of the artwork. Extending the concept beyond art, the essay suggests that our aesthetic appreciation of the natural world is likewise mediated by interpretive keys learned through exposure to artistic experience. Ultimately, while a perfectly exhaustive interpretation remains an ideal rarely attainable, the interpretive key emerges as the indispensable instrument for unlocking the specific law of the artwork. L’arte—nelle sue varie forme espressive: letteratura, pittura, scultura, musica, architettura, cinema, danza, fotografia, fumetto—è essenzialmente un modo per accedere a, e svelare l’invisibile. Essa condivide questa capacità di rivelazione con la scienza, la filosofia e la religione. L’arte, al pari della filosofia, ci insegna, come diceva il filosofo francese Merleau-Ponty, a vedere il mondo in un modo nuovo; l’arte, al pari della scienza, ci fa scoprire aspetti nascosti della realtà; l’arte, al pari della religione, ci svela il senso più intimo dell’esistenza. Poco importa che l’invisibile sia tale perché non esiste realmente, o perché non è avvenuto ancora, o perché non sappiamo se esiste, o perché esiste ma non sappiamo ancora vederlo, o perché è legato ad un’esperienza individuale singola e irripetibile, o perché, infine, esiste ma i nostri sensi non ci danno modo di percepirlo. L’arte sa comunque svelarcelo. Ma come fa l’arte a farci vedere l’invisibile? L’arte può non solo distrarci, divertirci, o consolarci, ma può anche istruirci, guidarci, farci riflettere, prendere coscienza, darci speranza ed elevarci. L’arte non si limita a raffigurare e descrivere la realtà, né ad edulcorarla, ma la interpreta, illumina, celebra, nobilita e può persino intervenire su di essa fino a trasformarla, trasformandoci.

In una società altamente popolata e scientificamente e tecnologicamente avanzata come la nostra, ogni elogio dell’errore sembrerebbe essere fuori luogo. Anche il minimo errore umano può avere pesanti conseguenze negative su ampie parti della popolazione. L’errore, però, è una componente inevitabile della nostra esistenza. Volenti o nolenti, noi viviamo negli errori, di errori, con gli errori e grazie agli errori. Lo testimonia la presenza dei bias cognitivi (ad esempio, il bias di conferma e il bias dell’ancoraggio), sui quali facciamo quotidianamente affidamento quando prendiamo le nostre decisioni e ci formiamo le nostre opinioni. Pur inducendoci a commettere degli errori, i bias cognitivi dimostrano in varie occasioni la loro validità adattativa quali scorciatoie mentali che il cervello adotta in situazioni in cui abbiamo poco tempo e scarse risorse a disposizione per prendere una decisione. Siamo tutti destinati a sbagliare. Non stupisce, quindi, il disappunto che proviamo quando qualcuno, che sappiamo essere altrettanto fallibile quanto noi, ci fa osservare gli errori che commettiamo—anche perché chi parla di errori inevitabilmente introduce un rapporto asimmetrico tra sé e l’altro, rendendo se stesso un “esperto”, “competente”, “giudice” o “conoscitore” e l’altro un “inaffidabile”, un “irresponsabile” o un “colpevole”. Ben vengano dunque, in questo senso, le occasioni che ci svelano gli equivoci e gli inganni che si celano nell’uso della parola “errore”. Non vi è dubbio che le occasioni più feconde e significative ce la fornisca l’arte. E questo perché l’arte è il luogo dell’errore per eccellenza. È il luogo in cui le regole e le norme della realtà ordinaria vengono continuamente ribaltate, rovesciate e riscritte dall’artista in ogni sua opera. Nell’arte, l’errore non è mai un difetto, ma un mezzo di libertà creativa, un modo per aprire spazi di senso e possibilità che il linguaggio, le convenzioni, le norme della vita ordinaria e il senso comune non consentirebbero.

In questo libro, alcuni dei classici problemi dell’estetica vengono affrontati da un nuovo punto di vista: il punto di vista del costruttore di macchine intelligenti. Infine, assumendo come riferimento la Teoria dell’Artificiale, vengono analizzate le implicazioni che l’effettiva realizzazione pratica di un simile modello può com-portare.

Among the cognitive processes involved in the construction of any kind of meaning, attention is fundamental in determining why, how and what we mean. Attention plays a primary role in the process of learning the meanings of words and more generally of acquiring knowledge; signification, discourse and persuasion; perceiving, representing and (re)framing reality; shaping the attitudes of the audience; conveying values and ideologies. Conversely, the meanings of words and more generally, of signs, convey the condensed instructions for the attentional operations one has to perform in order to consciously experience what is expressed through and by them. Language, by addressing and guiding attention in specific ways, helps to select, amplify and support certain semantic components and concepts, and construct and communicate knowledge and values. This book is the first to present a comprehensive overview of the extant research on the relationships between attention and meaning. The contributions collected here offer an overview of the most prominent theories and models developed so far that aim to explain how attention determines meaning construction. This book will be of interest to students, researchers and teachers in the realm of linguistics, semantics, discourse studies, semiotics, psycholinguistics, computational linguistics, linguistic development, cognitive architectures of language, neuropsychology of linguistic function and social psychology.

Operational Linguistics defines prepositions as relational tools that produce a prepositional assembling (PA) of the XprepZ type by making Z determine X according to the specific instructions provided by each preposition. In this chapter, I put forward my analyses of the instructions provided by some of the most-used English prepositions: of, in, to, for, with, on, at, by, over, against, and without. The analyses are spelled out in terms of the cognitive operations (CO) that produce the conscious experiences conveyed by each preposition. This overcomes the shortcomings of the traditional debate over the syncategorematic, polysemantic, or monosemantic nature of prepositions, which primarily originates from analyzing prepositions in terms of the products of their usage (that is, the overall meaning of the PA) rather than in terms of what produces prepositions.

Linguists have always been aware that prepositions form a separate part of speech that differs from the other parts of speech, but have never found an agreement on a common definition of prepositions. As explained by Ceccato and Zonta (1980), much of this impasse in defining prepositions, as well as more in general the other parts of speech, originates from adopting, as an analytical tool, linguistic and objectivist semantic notions that are defined in circular terms. In order to avoid the inconsistencies and circularities brought about by linguistic and objectivist semantic notions, non-linguistic and non-objectivist semantic notions must be adopted. Following and developing Ceccato’s original research program (Operational Linguistics), I have adopted a set of cognitive operations (CO) as the analytical tool to analyze prepositions. The set of CO includes the operations performed by attention and by what I have defined as the self (Marchetti, 2018, 2022). Among the sub-systems of the self, the most relevant ones for the analysis of prepositions are working memory, long-term memory, and force dynamics. Thanks to this set of CO, it is possible to differentiate prepositions from the other parts of speech and grammatical constructions that are functionally akin to prepositions (conjunctions, relative pronouns, noun-adjective phrases, and the subject-predicate construction, etc.). Prepositions are accordingly defined as relational tools that produce a prepositional assembling (PA) of the XprepZ type by making Z determine X according to the specific instructions provided by each preposition.

Conscious experience emerges as a necessary consequence of transforming information processing from a purely automatic, stimulus-driven response to a more flexible, autonomous system driven by self-generated tasks. This transformation implies that the system no longer passively processes pre-defined environmental information but instead actively determines what information is important to it. For this transformation to occur, the system must be deprived of its proximal links with the environment, as these links strictly limit and specify its behavior. Once these links are severed, the system can establish new, distal, and mediated relationships with the environment based on its own specific and contingent values, needs, and plans. Consciousness is precisely this mediated way of continuously relating the system to the environment. Attention plays a fundamental role in shaping both the phenomenal (qualitative) aspects of consciousness and its content. The phenomenal aspect arises from the temporary modulation in the system's neural energy state, induced by its attentional activity. The contents of consciousness are determined by how attention segments the continuous, undifferentiated stream of environmental information into elemental mental building blocks, which are then combined through working memory. This selective and combinatorial activity produces new basic experiential and cultural dimensions. These dimensions enable us to imagine and simulate new scenarios without relying on direct sensory input, thus enhancing our ability to autonomously control our environment. Language represents the primary visible means of correlating and combining individual elements into theoretically infinite sequences.

The book concludes with a call to action for business leaders to embrace linguistic precision, embrace paradoxes, develop narratives, and engage in continuous learning to effectively navigate the complexities of business communication and negotiation.

Attention plays a central role in the production of conscious experience (CE): there cannot be CE without some form of attention. Equally important for the production of CE are the cognitive processes that feed and pilot attention. These processes are performed by the self. The self provides the input for attentional processing. CE arises when attention processes the input provided by the self. Any research intended to analyze how CE is produced, including the CE of linguistic meaning (LM), must take into account the operations performed by attention and the self. The awareness of the role played for CE production by attention and the self opens a new perspective for semantic studies. From this perspective, LMs can be seen as condensed instructions on the operations that attention and self must perform in order to produce the relevant CEs. Consequently, LMs can be analysed in terms of these operations.

The primary determinant of the self (S) is the conscious experience (CE) we have of it. Therefore, it does not come as a surprise that empirical research on S mainly resorts to the CE (or lack of CE) that subjects have of their S. What comes as a surprise is that empirical research on S does not tackle the problem of how CE contributes to building S. Empirical research investigates how S either biases the cognitive processing of stimuli or is altered through a wide range of means (meditation, hypnosis, etc.). In either case, even for different reasons, considerations of how CE contributes to building S are left unspecified in empirical research. This article analyzes these reasons and proposes a theoretical model of how CE contributes to building S. According to the proposed model, the phenomenal aspect of consciousness is produced by the modulation—engendered by attentional activity—of the energy level of the neural substrate (that is, the organ of attention) that underpins attentional activity. The phenomenal aspect of consciousness supplies the agent with a sense of S and informs the agent on how its S is affected by the agent’s own operations. The phenomenal aspect of consciousness performs its functions through its five main dimensions: qualitative, quantitative, hedonic, temporal, and spatial. Each dimension of the phenomenal aspect of consciousness can be explained by a specific aspect of the modulation of the energy level of the organ of attention. Among other advantages, the model explains the various forms of S as outcomes resulting from the operations of a single mechanism and provides a unifying framework for empirical research on the neural underpinnings of S.

This introduction to Learnable Theory and Analysis leverages several contributions that Italian researchers and research centers have provided in Philosophy, Linguistics and Neurosciences. Contributions which appear particularly relevant in the construction of a solid link between Philosophy and Business Studies. What distinguishes conscious information processing from other kinds of information processing is its phenomenal aspect (PAC), the-what-it-is-like for an agent to experience something. The PAC supplies the agent with a sense of self, and informs the agent on how its self is affected by the agent’s own operations. The PAC originates from the activity that attention performs to detect the state of what I define “the self” (S). S is centered and develops on a hierarchy of innate and acquired values, and is primarily expressed via the central and peripheral nervous systems; it maps the agent’s body and cognitive capacities, and its interactions with the environment. The detection of the state of S by attention modulates the energy level of the organ of attention (OA), i.e., the neural substrate that underpins attention. This modulation generates the PAC. The PAC can be qualified according to five dimensions: qualitative, quantitative, hedonic, temporal and spatial. Each dimension can be traced back to a specific feature of the modulation of the energy level of the OA.

Mentiamo in mille modi: quando raccontiamo una bugia, quando illudiamo noi stessi e gli altri, quando truffiamo, imbrogliamo e fingiamo. Mentiamo a parole e gesti. Mentiamo per far del male ma anche a fin di bene. La capacità di mentire, come la speculare capacità di riconoscere la menzogna, fanno parte integrante del nostro bagaglio cognitivo: senza di esse ci sarebbe impossibile condurre una normale vita sociale. Dialoghi tra il serio e il faceto sulla conoscenza", gli autori hanno deciso di intraprendere in comune una nuova avventura letteraria. Ne Il visibile o l'invisibile? Dialoghi tra il serio e il faceto sulla conoscenza, gli interventi dei due autori si alternavano in capitoli scritti singolarmente da ognuno dei due. Questa nuova opera, invece, vede esplicitarsi il loro pensiero in compresenza in ogni capitolo. Nel loro primo lavoro, l'oggetto era stato la ricerca della verità: una ricerca che i due autori hanno effettuato esplorando il visibile e l'invisibile, nello sforzo di capire quale dei due consenta di raggiungerla, in un continuo esercizio mentale lungo il pensiero dei filosofi, degli scrittori, degli scienziati, dei pittori e dei musicisti che hanno puntellato la storia dell'umanità. In questa seconda opera, gli autori, consapevoli dell’enorme importanza che il linguaggio orale e scritto riveste per l’espressione del pensiero, si sono soffermati sulle regole della Grammatica, senza le quali la comunicazione con gli altri risulterebbe impossibile. Onde risparmiarsi un lavoro ciclopico e soprattutto onde evitare di tediare oltremodo i gentili lettori, gli autori si sono limitati alla sola Grammatica della lingua italiana e alle sue principali voci, benché le considerazioni che essi svolgono possano essere tranquillamente estese anche alle altre lingue. Come nel precedente libro, uno dei due, Giorgio, procede con un esame scientifico degli argomenti trattati, mentre Pier Celeste, pur affrontando gli stessi argomenti, esercita la sua sconfinata fantasia, dalla quale emergono gli aspetti particolari non meno importanti delle regole, le eccezioni. Il pensiero di Giorgio è affidato a due dei quattro protagonisti dell’opera: il signor Punto e la sua consorte, la signora Spunto; il pensiero di Pier Celeste è affidato agli altri due protagonisti: Grevisse e la moglie Pratica. I nomi scelti per i protagonisti rispettano lo spirito di ognuno di essi. Grevisse è il nome dell'autore di una Grammatica della lingua francese, considerata la Bibbia del Francese moderno. Punto è un nome che indica la precisa puntualità nell'esame delle varie voci della Grammatica italiana stessa. La signora Spunto è così chiamata perché prende sempre lo spunto da ciò che dicono Grevisse e Punto, per intervenire nel dibattito. Pratica, invece, è così chiamata perché della compagnia è colei che si limita all'aspetto pratico della vicenda, che si svolge in un paesino delle Prealpi bellunesi dove i quattro sono impegnati in un'interminabile partita di canasta, occupandosi di rifornire gli sfidanti del supporto in bibite e cibarie necessarie per mantenerli in vita. Il tutto trae origine dalla Grammatica e Logica di Port-Royal, da cui sono nate tutte le grammatiche moderne, ma non meno importanti sono i lavori degli altri studiosi a cui i due autori spesso si riferiscono durante le loro discussioni.
