Aristotle and Picasso both stated that art possesses catharsis—the purification of the soul. Because art is physically non-utilitarian (empty), it holds an infinity for the mind and spirit. This resonates with the Buddhist concept from the Heart Sutra: "Form is emptiness, emptiness is form." In this way, the art and prayers of both West and East should inherently coexist without contradiction.
The Renaissance shifted from God to man; contemporary art shifted from man to thought. I believe the next era will shift from thought to emptiness (the margin, the body). In the language of contemp…
