5IntroductionIn Iris Marion Young (ed.), On Female Body Experience: Throwing Life a Girl and Other Essays, Oxford University Press Usa. pp. 3-11. 2004.The introduction presents an overview of the essays included in this volume, which are presented as a set of overlapping inquiries about social meanings of female embodiment. The distinction between “female” and “feminine” experience is explained and the tradition of existential phenomenlogy is described. The essays are shown to take a feminist perspective, both as expressing sex and gender-specific female subjectivity, and as claiming that women are not as free as they ought to be.

68Self‐Determination and Global DemocracyIn Inclusion and Democracy, Oxford University Press. 2000.The scope of issues of justice extends globally on many issues. Governance of global society therefore needs transformed institutions. A vision of global democracy assumes a relational model of self‐determination as non‐domination in the context of inclusive and stronger global institutions.

99Civil Society and Its LimitsIn Inclusion and Democracy, Oxford University Press. 2000.Theories of civil society do not adequately distinguish the functions of private, civic, and political associations. A public sphere arising from free associational life both holds power accountable and produces new ideas. Democratic processes that aim to promote justice, however, also require strong state regulatory institutions.
