Karina Ortiz Villa

I am a PhD Candidate in Philosophy at the University of California, San Diego. My research focuses on Latin American political philosophy, with particular emphasis on Mexican philosophy, liberalism, political authority, and the formation of legal and moral categories in contexts of social and institutional instability. My dissertation examines questions of political legitimacy, exclusion, and democratic fragility in nineteenth-century Latin American political thought, drawing connections between historical debates in Mexico and contemporary political philosophy. In addition my dissertation, I also work on the ethics of migration and the ethics of artificial intelligence, particularly where emerging technologies intersect with immigration enforcement, border governance, and administrative decision-making. My research engages questions about harm, agency, responsibility, and moral justification in technologically mediated institutional contexts, and sits at the intersection of moral philosophy, political philosphy, philosophy of law, and philosophy of technology.
