Kelsey N Berry, Ph.D., is faculty at the Center for Bioethics and in the Department of Global Health and Social Medicine at Harvard Medical School. A health policy researcher and bioethicist, Kelsey's research employs empirical and conceptual methods to analyze dilemmas in population-level bioethics and progress towards just health systems and societies. Special emphases of her work include the ethics of rationing scarce medical resources, ethical issues in the distribution of responsibility for health and social determinants of health (SDOH), the ethical management of equity and health improvement initiatives in health payer and delivery organizations, and research on health policy for vulnerable populations. Her PhD (health policy & ethics, Harvard University) examined the role of nonmedical factors in determining patient admittance to organ transplantation and substance use disorder systems, using qualitative and quasi-experimental methods to describe how health actors allocate access and arguing for fairer approaches through the lens of distributive and procedural justice theory. Her postdoctoral fellowship (Center for Bioethics, Harvard Medical School) focused on ethics education. Through her research, teaching, and service in health policy and ethics, Kelsey is dedicated to developing practices that will enable all of us to acknowledge what we owe to one another, both in health systems and in the social lives we inevitably share.
