This first extensive study of Spinoza's philosophy of mind concentrates on two problems crucial to the philosopher's thoughts on the matter: the requirements for having a thought about a particular object, and the problem of the mind's relation to the body. Della Rocca contends that Spinoza's positions are systematically connected with each other and with a principle at the heart of his metaphysical system: his denial of causal or explanatory relations between the mental and the physical. In this way, Della Rocca's exploration of these two problems provides a new and illuminating perspective on Spinoza's philosophy as a system.

This guide has an introduction and five chapters, one for each of the parts of Spinoza's Ethics. The Introduction includes background material necessary for productive study of the Ethics: advice for working with Spinoza's geometrical method, a biographical sketch of Spinoza, and accounts of important predecessors: Aristotle, Maimonides, and Descartes. The chapters that follow trace the Ethics in detail, including accounts of most of the elements in Spinoza's book and raising questions for further research. Chapter 1, "One Infinite Substance," covers central arguments of Spinoza's substance monism. Chapter 2, "The Idea of the Human Body," follows Spinoza's detailed metaphysics of ordinary objects, his theory of mind, and his epistemology. Chapter 3, "Desire, Joy, and Sadness," works from Spinoza's broad theory of finite activity in the striving to persevere in being to his detailed accounts of human action and passion. Chapter 4, "Bondage to Passion," emphasizes Spinoza's formal theory of value, his intellectualism in ethics, and particular claims about value that follow from these commitments. Chapter 5, "The Power of the Intellect," begins with Spinoza's criticism of Descartes's account of our ability to control passion and moves to Spinoza's own theory, which emphasizes reason, the eternal part of the mind, and human blessedness.

O objetivo do artigo é examinar o argumento cartesiano em favor da distinção corpo/alma à luz da tese, também cartesiana, da união corpo/alma no homem. A hipótese a ser defendida é a de que a prova da distinção real entre corpo e alma envolve um conceito de substância segundo o qual um atributo principal não pode coexistir com outro numa mesma substância. Mais ainda, será sustentado que interpretando assim o argumento em favor da distinção é possível admitir que Descartes ao provar a união entre essas duas substâncias distintas não abandona nem enfraquece sua tese dualista

Em harmonia com sua tese acerca do conhecimento de um modo geral, Tomás de Aquino sustenta que o conhecimento que o intelecto tem de si é também dependente dos sentidos. Segundo Tomás, há pelo menos dois modos de o intelecto se conhecer (ambos em virtude do ato do intelecto de conhecer): o conhecimento singular da existência do intelecto e o conhecimento universal da natureza do intelecto, isto é, o conhecimento de seus princípios de operações, ambos dependentes, ainda que de modo remoto, das percepções sensíveis. Apresento uma leitura da Segunda Meditação segundo a qual Descartes inicia seu projeto de recusa do modelo tomista-aristotélico de conhecimento. Ele demonstra não só a incorporeidade do todo da alma mas, mais ainda, demonstra que embora o conhecimento da existência e o da natureza do intelecto consistam no conhecimento de suas operações fundamentais — a saber, conceber, julgar e inferir — esse conhecimento não tem origem em qualquer impressão sensível.
