In 1980 John Searle imagined a man locked in a room with a rulebook, shuffling Chinese characters he could not read, and asked whether anything there understood anything. The thought experiment has framed the debate ever since. This paper argues that it no longer fits the machines we now argue about, and that the human understanding it quietly holds up as the standard is in no shape to serve as one. Searle's insistence on the difference between real understanding and a convincing imitation belongs to its moment: the same years gave us Baudrillard on simulation, a counterfeiting industry large enough to need its own federal statute, and a Coca-Cola that had to relabel itself Classic because the product alone could no longer prove it was the original. Insisting on genuineness is what people do when the copies are getting good. The thought experiment also relies on our being able to look over the man's shoulder and see that he is only matching symbols — and in a modern network there is no rulebook to read, not even for the people who built it. The usual escape, that Searle was only ever talking about the clunky AI of his day, is one he closed himself when he widened his position in later work. The paper then turns a term borrowed from AI engineering, context rot, back on us. Our own understanding decays in much the same way: memory rewrites what it stores, emotion tilts the scales before we notice, and every speaker runs a private version of the language that never quite matches anyone else's. Watch the word justice in the mouths of Putin, Trump and Khomeini — each is certain he is simply using it correctly. Recent findings from AI interpretability, on traits that pass between models through data that never mentions them, on memory that is periodically rebuilt, and on emotion-like states that measurably change what a system does, are brought to bear on an argument written in 1980. The conclusion turns the title around. The illusion of understanding may not be a machine problem at all. It may be what understanding has always been — partial, shaped by where you stand, and good enough to act on. The real question is how useful that illusion is to us.

This review essay examines Christoph Mick's "Lemberg, Lwów, L'viv, 1914–1947: Violence and Ethnicity in a Contested City" (Purdue University Press, 2015), a study of how a city that in 1914 was half Roman Catholic, 28 percent Jewish and 18 percent Greek Catholic had become an almost homogeneously Ukrainian city by 1947, with some 80 percent of its inhabitants arriving during or after the Second World War. The review situates Mick's work against the problem of "internal" historiography identified by Heorhii Kasianov: accounts of Galician ethnic conflict organised around a plot in which one's own nation suffers while aliens inflict suffering. Writing from outside all three national traditions, Mick has no stake in that structure, and the review argues that this is the book's principal value for Ukrainian readers. It follows his account of interethnic conflict as a product of modernisation — schools, press, and a restricted municipal franchise that left Ukrainians without a single seat on the Lviv city council — and of the successive pogroms of 1914, 1918 and 1941. Particular attention is given to Mick's treatment of the pogrom of 1941, which coincided with the OUN's proclamation of Ukrainian statehood, and to his greater caution by comparison with Grzegorz Rossoliński-Liebe, John-Paul Himka and Tarik Cyril Amar. The review also weighs the Russian myth that Ukrainian nationality was "invented in the Austrian General Staff," and closes with a critique of state-funded historical memory in Ukraine: historical truth benefits no one and may be unpleasant for everyone, and therein lies the difficulty of attaining it.

Metamodernism Manifesto is a short illustrated essay that defines metamodernism through a single organising question: how much trust does an artist place in reality? Its opening claim is deliberately plain — reality has not become more complicated; we have simply begun to notice more of it. That accumulation of impressions, the manifesto argues, produces a hybrid consciousness capable of holding inseparable and antagonistic phenomena together without resolving them, and from it follows a new artistic method and a new metaphorical apparatus for understanding reality. The text proceeds as a sequence of short propositions. A typology of artistic trust distinguishes romantics and realists, who trust only what they can see (Childe Harold, Mr. Pickwick), from modernists, who trust only what they cannot — Malevich's Black Square, and by extension the mythologies of Hitler and Stalin; from postmodernists, who trust nothing (Beckett's Watt, written while its author hid from the Gestapo); and from metamodernists, who trust everything, as in the films of Wes Anderson. A second section argues that metamodernism is necessarily counterintuitive: universal search and the documentation of reality by millions of people have ended the romantic faith in intuitive insight, and accuracy is now a function of the number of checks. A third takes up the critical demand for authorial purity — a caste system among critics — and sets out romantic-realistic, modernist, postmodern and metamodern ideals, locating the metamodern difference in constant oscillation, where no distinction remains between the hand and the glove. Further sections treat the "snippet" as a characteristic metamodern device, drawing on the six invented novels Suzy Bishop carries in Wes Anderson's Moonrise Kingdom, and close with a "Triad of Uncertainty": there is nothing that cannot be funny, nothing that can be called certain, nothing that can be said to be in place. The manifesto is offered as an open document. It may be expanded with full agreement, elaborated in greater detail, or completely rejected.
