This article will briefly outline one of the fundamental differences for the whole of Kant's philosophical thought, namely the distinction between receptivity (affection) and spontaneity (function). This distinction will be developed only in the epistemological realm of his critical thought. Based on this distinction, we will explore the possibility of establishing a synthetic representational criterion that will help us to define the spontaneous or receptive character of the cognitive faculties, by virtue of the type of representation (mediate or immediate) that they generate. This will lead us to sustain a conceptualist thesis of conscious rep-resentations, which, in turn, will result in a teleological reading of the cognitive powers in the Critique of Pure Reason.

In the Analytic of the Sublime in Kant's Critique of the Power of Judgment, the connection between pure aesthetic judgment and mathematics appears at first sight as both surprising and unprecedented within Kantian aesthetics. The sublime is mathematical (as well as dynamical), leaving the attentive reader to ponder how this relationship between the mathematical and a feeling that claims universal communicability is possible. This distinction between mathematical and dynamic forms of the sublime is entirely original and lacks historical precedent. Neither Pseudo-Longinus nor Joseph Addison nor Edmund Burke nor Henry Home nor John Baillie (Scheck 2009, pp. 34ff), nor even Kant himself in his pre-critical work, Observations on the Feelings of the Beautiful and the Sublime (1764), made this distinction between two types of the sublime: mathematical and dynamical. Moreover, Kant emphasizes the autonomy of pure aesthetic judgments from both particular concepts and specific sensations, as neither of these representations constitutes the foundation of aesthetic judgment. Consequently, the origin of the association between the sublime and the mathematical, as well as the dynamical, remains opaque. This article will focus exclusively on the nexus between the mathematical and the sublime, invoking the synthesis of composition from Kant's First Critique as a possible explanation of this Kantian innovation.

Resumen: El presente trabajo intenta analizar los elementos críticos a la base de aquella suerte de prescripción que Edward Said formulara a los intelectuales bajo la célebre consigna de “decir las verdades al poder”, esto es, de interpelar públicamente al poder -político, económico, religioso, militar- frente a toda evidencia de injusticia, inconsistencia o turbia manipulación en su operar. En tanto tal, y a partir de nuestra lectura de Said, delimitamos cinco dilemas que el intelectual ha de resolver, en tanto requisitos para decir las verdades al poder: orientación intramundana versus extramundana, rol profético versus sacerdotal, libertad universalista versus organicidad, racionalidad sustantiva versus instrumental y arrojo versus temor. Se comentan las implicaciones de estos dilemas a la luz de los desafíos y oportunidades que las sociedades contemporáneas -en particular, las latinoamericanas- presentan para el rol del intelectual.: This work analyzes the critical foundations of that quasi-rule posed by Edward Said to intellectuals through the famous motto “speaking truth to power”, that is, of publicly interpellating to power -political, economic, religious, military- whenever its exercise may involve injustice, inconsistency or underhanded manipulation. So, according to our interpretation of Said’s work, we identify five dilemmas the intellectual should resolve in order to be able to speak truth to power: a worldliness orientation versus an otherworldliness one, a prophetic role versus a priestly one, universalist freedom versus organic compromise, a substantive rationality versus an instrumental one, and courage versus fear. Involvements of these dilemmas are discussed according to the challenges and opportunities posed by current societies -in particular, the Latin American ones- to the intellectual’s role.

My paper is divided into five sections. The first provides a review of various positions in the secondary literature concerning the issue of conceptual restriction in aesthetic judgments. The second offers a brief overview of the critical justification for pure aesthetic judgments. The third presents my interpretation of Kant’s aesthetic judgments, focusing on the distinction between the direct and indirect content of representations and, consequently, the classification of the types of representations involved. The fourth section addresses what I term the misinterpretation of conceptual restriction in aesthetic judgments. The fifth part, I advance systematic arguments to clarify and correct this misunderstanding.

Autonomía es sin duda el concepto clave en la filosofía práctica kantiana, un concepto que abarca tanto la moral, como el derecho, la política e incluso la religión, y que tiene también su expresión estética en lo sublime. Estos son los asuntos que se abordan en Kant y los retos práctico-morales de la actualidad, un libro plural que unifica diversas perspectivas en torno a la reflexión kantiana sobre la moral. Autonomía es la actitud propia de la mayoría de edad a la que aspira el hombre moderno. Es verdad que las experiencias negativas de las muchas e inagotables guerras (en diversos ámbitos y niveles) y de los desastres ecológicos provocados por el hombre en el siglo XX han conducido a poner en tela de juicio dicha autonomía racional. Pero si analizamos detenidamente y con claridad, descubrimos que esos nefastos acontecimientos han ocurrido porque los hombres, individual o colectivamente, se han conducido de manera irracional. Nuestra época es aún ilustrada y sigue necesitando del paciente trabajo del concepto, de lo racional y de la educación. Para ello ha de asumirse el reto de poner en claro en qué consiste la capacidad racional humana, tanto en el conocer como en el actuar. En todo esto la visión moral kantiana continúa teniendo vigencia en la actualidad y resulta de todo punto interesante este libro para los que quieran reflexionar escuchando lo que nos puede decir aún hoy el pensamiento kantiano.

In diesem Artikel möchte ich mich mit der Systematik der Vernunft in Kants kritischer Philosophie befassen und der Frage nachgehen, ob sie eine teleologische Einheit bildet. Die Struktur meiner Arbeit ist wie folgt: Zuerst beschreibe ich kurz und allgemein einige Ansätze, die die systematische Einheit der Vernunft bei Kant bezweifeln, um die unterschiedlichen Annährungen an das Problem zu zeigen. Danach schildere ich konzis die von Kant selbst thematisierte Kluft zwischen dem theoretischen und dem praktischen Gebrauch der Vernunft. Daraufhin stelle ich einige Probleme innerhalb und außerhalb dieser Kluft dar. Dann analysiere ich die folgenden drei Anwendungen der Vernunft im Zusammenhang mit Kants Notion der Philosophie: die regulativen Ideen des hypothetischen Gebrauchs der Vernunft, das Postulat des Daseins Gottes im praktischen Gebrauch der Vernunft und das Prinzip der objektiven Zweckmäßigkeit der „teleologischen Urteilskraft“. Diese drei Instanzen betrachte ich als drei von Kants Versuchen, das System der Vernunft mittels der Idee einer teleologischen Einheit darzustellen. Abschließend werde ich dafür argumentieren, dass die Idee einer systematischen Einheit im Rahmen der kritischen Philosophie notwendigerweise dem zweckmäßigen Charakter unserer Vernunft entspricht.

Diese Arbeit zeigt, dass die Dualität des mathematischen und dynamischen Erhabenen bei Kant auch dem Zweck der dritten Kritik dient, die Kluft zwischen den Gebieten der Natur und der Freiheit zu schließen. In der Sekundärliteratur zu Kant wird das Erhabene oft als Anhang des Schönen oder aufgrund seiner mehrfachen Dualitäten als Bruch in Kants Ansatz angesehen. Dies geschieht, weil solche Interpretationen die Elemente der Theorie des Erhabenen atomisch und nicht systematisch rekonstruieren. Im Gegensatz dazu wird in dieser Arbeit mittels der Resonanz der teleologischen Behandlung der Vernunft nicht nur die innere Systematik der dritten Kritik gezeigt, sondern auch die von der gesamten kritischen Philosophie. Die Vernunft als Vermögen der Zwecksetzung zu verstehen in ihrem praktischen und theoretischen Gebrauch, ist keine neue Idee oder neuer systematischer Rekonstruktionsversuch der kritischen Philosophie in der Kantforschung. Das eigentlich Neue in dieser Monografie ist, einen Beweis von ihrer teleologischen Einheit aus der ästhetischen Perspektive des paradoxen Gefühls des Erhabenen geleistet zu haben.

Immanuel Kant entwickelte im Rahmen der Kritik der Urteilskraft seinen Begriff des Zwecks. Die daraus entstehenden Implikationen für seine theoretische und praktische Philosophie, aber auch für sein System insgesamt sind weitreichend. Deshalb bleibt die Betrachtung der kantischen Teleologie in diesem Sammelband nicht bei einem Werk stehen, sondern betrachtet seine komplette Philosophie und zeigt sowohl Verbindungen als auch Brüche auf. Damit kann das Potenzial von Kants Teleologie, auch über seine Philosophie hinaus, neu bewertet werden.
