  • Fantasy novels are products of popular culture. They owe their popularity also to the visualization of medievalist artifacts on book covers and designs, illustrations, maps, and marketing: Castles on towering cliffs, cathedral-like architecture, armored heroes and enchanting fairies, fierce dragons and mages follow mythical archetypes and develop pictorial aesthetics of fantasy, completed by gothic fonts, maps and page layout that refer to medieval manuscripts and chronicles. The contributors to…Read more

Transzendenz, Praxis und Politik bei Kant (edited book)
with Oliviero Angeli, Thomas Rentsch, and Nele Schneidereit
    Oldenbourg Wissenschaftsverlag. 2013.
Reflections on the Sequence of the First Three Books of the Mengzi
    Journal of Chinese Philosophy 41 (3-4): 287-306. 2014.
This article argues that the Latter Han editor of the Mengzi had a clear idea of which passages in the Mengzi should be at which place in the text. The sequence of the paragraphs may sometimes have been influenced by chronological considerations. However, more important than chronology was the logic of events told in the individual paragraphs of the Mengzi. The article retraces how the editor arranged paragraphs that probably circulated independently before the process of compilation.

Operators’ Experiences with Intelligent Compaction Systems in Road Pavement: A Technological Mediation Approach
with Seirgei Miller and Faridaddin Vahdatikhaki
In Christelle Didier, Aurélien Béranger, Antoine Bouzin, Hugo Paris & Jérémie Supiot (eds.), Engineering and Value Change, Springer Nature Switzerland. pp. 233-248. 2025.
This study delves into the influence of intelligent compaction (IC) systems on the perceptions and actions of roller operators in road pavement practices. These operators occasionally tend to ignore these IC systems or even turn them off while performing their tasks. A major question is why the operators don’t always use IC systems. By using the technological mediation approach, operators’ reasons for ignoring or even turning IC systems off in road pavement practice are explored. In the technolo…Read more

The Normative Orientations of Climate Scientists
    with Dennis Bray
    Science and Engineering Ethics 23 (5): 1351-1367. 2017.
In 1942 Robert K. Merton tried to demonstrate the structure of the normative system of science by specifying the norms that characterized it. The norms were assigned the abbreviation CUDOs: Communism, Universalism, Disinterestedness, and Organized skepticism. Using the results of an on-line survey of climate scientists concerning the norms of science, this paper explores the climate scientists’ subscription to these norms. The data suggests that while Merton’s CUDOs remain the overall guiding mo…Read more
