34Typification in Society and Social Science: The Continuing Relevance of Schutz’s Social PhenomenologyHuman Studies 32 (3): 263-289. 2009.This paper examines Alfred Schutz’s insights on types and typification. Beginning with a brief overview of the history and meaning of typification in interpretive sociology, the paper further addresses both the ubiquity and the necessity of typification in social life and scientific method. Schutz’s contribution itself is lacking in empirical application and grounding, but examples are provided of ongoing empirical research which advances the understanding of types and typification. As is sugges…Read more

29Avīci Hell and wújiān (無間) in the Cognitive Process: Observations on Some Technical Terms in the Jié tuō dào lùnJournal of Indian Philosophy 44 (5): 939-956. 2016.The text Jié tuō dào lùn, or Chinese translation of *Vimuttimagga mentions the Avīci Hell all of a sudden in the section on the cognitive process. The problematic phrase wújiān shēng Āpídìyù has been interpreted in different ways by several scholars. Japanese scholars tend to skip the phrase, or regard the term Āpídìyù as a typographic error. Given that we do not have an original text, however, the phrase needs to be understood as it is. In contrast, the English translation interprets the term w…Read more

The Defense Activation Theory of Epistemic JustificationDissertation, The University of Arizona. 1992.In current epistemology, there are two different conceptions of epistemic justification. According to the first genetic conception, a justified belief is a well-formed belief. According to the second defense conception, how the belief is formed is irrelevant to the epistemic justification of the belief. What is important for the justification of the belief is whether the cognitive agent has a defense of the belief in question. ;I construct my own defense account of epistemic justification on the…Read more

30Cultural and individual differences in the generalization of theories regarding human thinkingBehavioral and Brain Sciences 34 (5): 259-260. 2011.Tests of a universal theory often find significant variability and individual differences between cultures. We propose that descriptivism research should focus more on cultural and individual differences, especially those based on motivational factors. Explaining human thinking by focusing on individual difference factors across cultures could provide a parsimonious paradigm, by uncovering the true causal mechanisms of psychological processes

38Consideration of the linguistic characteristics of letters makes the universal model of reading more universalBehavioral and Brain Sciences 35 (5): 291-292. 2012.We suggest that the linguistic characteristics of letters also need to be considered to fully understand how a reader processes printed words. For example, studies in Korean showed that unambiguity in the assignment of letters to their appropriate onset, vowel, or coda slot is one of the main sources of the letter-transposition effect. Indeed, the cognitive system that processes Korean is tuned to the structure of the Korean writing system.

47That’s Not Fair! How Personal Value for Diversity Influences Reactions to the Perceived Discriminatory Treatment of MinoritiesJournal of Business Ethics 111 (2): 211-218. 2012.Using Leventhal’s (Social exchange: Advances in theory and research, Plenum Press, New York, 1980 ) rules of procedural justice as well as deontic justice (Folger in Research in social issues in management, Information Age, Greenwich, CT, 2001 ), we examine how personal value for diversity moderates the negative relationship between perceived discrimination against minorities (i.e., racial minorities and females) at work and the perceived procedural justice of minorities’ treatment by the organi…Read more

76Internalism and Externalism in EpistemologyAmerican Philosophical Quarterly 30 (4). 1993.Internalism restricts justifiers to what is "within" the subject. two main forms of internalism are (1) perspectival internalism (pi), which restricts justifiers to what the subject knows or justifiably believes, and (2) access internalism (ai), which restricts justifiers to what is directly accessible to the subject. the two forms are analyzed and interrelated, and the grounds for each are examined. it is concluded that although pi is both unacceptable and without adequate support, a modest for…Read more
