In the most comprehensive examination to date of Heidegger’s Nazism, Emmanuel Faye draws on previously unavailable materials to paint a damning picture of Nazism’s influence on the philosopher’s thought and politics. In this provocative book, Faye uses excerpts from unpublished seminars to show that Heidegger’s philosophical writings are fatally compromised by an adherence to National Socialist ideas. In other documents, Faye finds expressions of racism and exterminatory anti-Semitism. Faye disputes the view of Heidegger as a naïve, temporarily disoriented academician and instead shows him to have been a self-appointed “spiritual guide” for Nazism whose intentionality was clear. Contrary to what some have written, Heidegger’s Nazism became even more radical after 1935, as Faye demonstrates. He revisits Heidegger’s masterwork, _Being and Time_, and concludes that in it Heidegger does not present a philosophy of individual existence but rather a doctrine of radical self-sacrifice, where individualization is allowed only for the purpose of heroism in warfare. Faye’s book was highly controversial when originally published in France in 2005. Now available in Michael B. Smith’s fluid English translation, it is bound to awaken controversy in the English-speaking world.

The myth of a German “Conservative Revolution” distinct from and opposed to National Socialism deserves to be re-examined. The correspondence of Swiss journalist Armin Mohler, the author of a 1950 thesis on the “Conservative Revolution”, shows how his work tried to exonerate certain Nazi authors, most notably Carl Schmitt. Mohler, who had tried to join the Waffen SS in 1942, also owed important positions over the course of his career to the influence of former Waffen SS leaders, such as the Swiss Franz Riedweg. This strategy of exoneration had an international impact. In France, Alain de Benoist, one of the leaders of the New Right, published the French translation of Mohler’s book in 1983. De Benoist himself uses the myth of the “Conservative Revolution” to promote the cultural hegemony of the European New Right. In Russia, the reception of this myth by the nationalist ideologist Aleksandr Dugin has contradictory features. In the early 1990s, Dugin had connected the “Conservative Revolution” with National Socialism and praised the SS. In 2009, he advocated the “fourth political theory,” supposedly distinct from fascism and Nazism, and used the thesis of a supposed “Conservative Revolution” to exonerate Nazi authors like Martin Heidegger and Carl Schmitt. Nevertheless, he agreed in 2023 to the republication in France of his earlier text on the “Conservative Revolution” and the SS, revealing how he varies his strategy depending on the historical and political context. This article concludes by arguing that the writings of Mohler, de Benoist and Dugin show the myth of the “Conservative Revolution” is more a reflection of a metapolitical worldview than a genuine philosophy of history.

In this study, I reconsider the question of the continuities and discontinuities between the Renaissance and the Early Modern period, putting the accent on the idea of “the perfection of man,” as René Descartes conceived it in his Meditations and his Principles of Philosophy. I show in what sense it is possible to speak in this connection of a humanist thought, and I proceed to distinguish between the two complementary meanings recognized by Descartes as being a part of the hominis perfectio. There is, on the one hand, a remarkable confidence in the natural capacities of the human mind and the conviction that since our faculties are all good by their nature, what is important is to make the best use of them; and on the other hand there is a general project to “elevate our nature to its highest degree of perfection.” Still, Descartes rejects, in the wake of Montaigne, the ontological conception of the hominis perfectio, which, after the manner of a Raymond Sebond, would make the human being the highest creature in the scale of beings. The main perfection of the human being declares itself for Descartes with respect to the less considerable perfections that are within us: a comparison that is internal to the study of the human being, and that is not carried out with respect to other creatures. Hence it is not between Montaigne and Descartes, between the time of the Renaissance and the Early Modern period, but, within the Renaissance itself, between Sebond and Montaigne, that the break with the image of the human being qua center of the world and goal of creation took place.

N'y a-t-il pas une contradiction dans l'oeuvre d'Arendt? On y trouve une description critique du totalitarisme national-socialiste, mais aussi l'apologie de Heidegger érigé, malgré son éloge de la "vérité interne et grandeur" du mouvement nazi, en roi secret de la pensée. L'étude des Origines du totalitarisme montre qu'Arendt développe une vision heideggérienne de la modernité. Dans Condition de l'homme moderne, la conception déshumanisée de l'humanité au travail et le discrédit jeté sur nos sociétés égalitaires procèdent également de Heidegger. En outre, des lettres inédites montrent qu'Arendt a décidé de marcher sur les pas de Heidegger avant leurs retrouvailles de l'année 1950. Il s'agit d'une adhésion intellectuelle, irréductible à la seule passion amoureuse, et qui mérite d'être prise au sérieux. Certes, Arendt ne partage pas l'antisémitisme exterminateur de Heidegger confirmé par ses Cahiers noirs. Que devient cependant la pensée, instrumentalisée dans l'opposition - nouveau mythe moderne - entre Heidegger, le "penseur" retiré sur les hauteurs neigeuses de sa hutte de Todtnauberg, et Eichmann, l'exécutant sans pensée, le "clown" muré dans sa cage de verre?

Après Condition de l'homme moderne et La crise de la culture, l'essai De la révolution (1963) est le troisième ouvrage d'une série dans laquelle Hannah Arendt expose le nouveau paradigme du politique qu'elle entend développer ainsi qu'un nouveau paradigme de la révolution. Dans un contexte de Guerre froide, elle propose de tirer les leçons de l'histoire en opposant ce qu'elle nomme le "désastre" de la Révolution française aux leçons d'une révolution supposée réussie, incarnée par la "Déclaration des droits" américaine. Les contributions des historiens et philosophes réunies dans ce volume, analysent la manière dont Arendt instrumentalise l'histoire des Révolutions américaine et française et se détermine par rapport à la Déclaration des droits de l'homme et du citoyen. Elles étudient également la place qu'Arendt attribue au peuple au cours de ces processus et dans quel esprit elle se réfère, dans le dernier chapitre de son essai de 1963, aux "conseils" révolutionnaires. La formule arendtienne du "droit à avoir des droits" amorce-t-elle, comme certains le soutiennent aujourd'hui, un tournant politique dans la considération des droits de l'homme? Ne représente-t-elle pas plutôt une machine de guerre contre la notion même de droit naturel, qui se trouve au fondement de ces droits? Thomas Sheehan’s attack on my book Heidegger, l’introduction du nazisme dans la philosophie, addressed neither the book’s topic nor its arguments. He instead highlighted a few isolated details in a sophistic and biased fashion. Moreover, his exposition was interspersed with ad personam insults not typically found in philosophical or scientific discussions. Although I had hitherto resolved not to respond to personal attacks, I owe it to the memory of Johannes Fritsche, who was also attacked by Sheehan, to take my turn to speak and to thereby pay intellectual tribute to Professor Fritsche. The article returns to the interpretation of Being and Time and analyzes the meaning and connotations of Heidegger’s use of the German term Bodenlosigkeit. The key methodological issue concerns the need to study the semantic, historical, and political context of concepts instead of hiding these issues by reducing everything to a battle between dogmatic positions.

ABSTRACTThis essay tracks Heidegger’s thought from 1919 forwards to the decisive years of his political engagement, on behalf of the Nazi movement. Part 1 tracks how the question concerning Being devolves into the implicitly identitarian question of who “we” are. Part 2 addresses the “existential” of Befindlichkeit which Heidegger in Sein und Zeit positions as prior to understanding, and examines his esoteric mode of writing as the means to cultivate a prerational Stimmung. Part 3 examines Heidegger’s response to his 1929–1930 questions of “What mood must we awaken?... Who are we, then?” in the decisive years of the Gleichchaltung, showing how Heidegger’s thinking elevates to ontological primacy a discriminatory and identitarian decision concerning who “we” are as the German volk. Part 4 examines in this light the Heideggerian “end of philosophy” in what the Black Notebooks talks of in terms of a “metapolitics ‘of’ the historical people”.
