Este nuevo libro colectivo recoge los trabajos del grupo de investigación de Filosofía de la PUCE, elaborados entre 2019 y 2020. El tema elegido, Tecnología y política, define una de las problemáticas contemporáneas más relevantes dentro del trabajo académico. Como en ocasiones anteriores, cada autor plantea contextos de lectura diversos; los aportes recorren un escenario complejo, resultado de los caminos que cada uno ha elegido para consolidar su propia reflexión a partir de los proyectos de escritura de tesis de posgrado y de investigaciones desarrolladas tanto en universidades europeas como americanas. Sin embargo, el punto de encuentro está dado en la perspectiva y en las condiciones que determinan la posibilidad de proponer un pensamiento crítico y propositivo desde América Latina.

The hospitality industry plays a crucial role in economic and social development by creating jobs and promoting economic structural transformation in many countries, including Vietnam. However, despite these significant contributions, the hospitality industry also negatively impacts the environment, highlighting the urgent need for sustainable development within this sector. This study emphasizes the importance of ethical leadership and green human resource management (GHRM) in fostering employee green behavior and in-role green performance to achieve sustainable development goals (SDGs) in the hospitality industry. A research model extending Social Exchange Theory and GHRM was developed to examine employee in-role green performance. A self-administered survey was conducted with 573 employees working in four- and five-star hotels in Vietnam. The findings validate the application of Social Exchange Theory in examining the effects of GHRM policies on employee green behavior and in-role green performance. Additionally, this study provides recommendations for hotels to enhance their policies toward achieving SDGs.

Modern Quality Management appeared in the 1920s and was particularly developed from the 1950s to the 1990s with quality control, quality assurance, Total Quality and eventually Business Excellence. First designed for industrial activities, it expanded into services from the 1970s. Thanks to a number of standards and management models, it enjoyed a fast growth from the 1960s to the early 2000s. Since the mid-2000s, it has, however, lost in popularity and been increasingly abandoned by companies. The key reason for that evolution seems to be that on the one hand the various quality standards and models no longer provide a competitive advantage to companies and on the other hand do not offer management principles and tools for companies to take up the challenges that have arisen in the economic, managerial, social and natural environments. This study first proposes an overview of Quality Management’s development since its inception and second an analysis of its decline examining possible reasons for it. Finally, in a prospective manner, it proposes ways thanks to which Quality Management could be rethought and revived.

This conceptual paper aims to show that the concept of homo economicus as the foundation of management needs to be discarded and replaced by the concept of humanistic enterprise in order to ensure the well-being of stakeholders and preservation of the environment. A combined and crossed study of the philosophies of Buddha, Confucius, Aristotle and Pope Francis is used as a desirable spirit for a renewed management paradigm. The concept of homo economicus, with its stress on the maximization of profit, has created deadly negative externalities for social well-being and the preservation of the environment. Consequently, the time has come to radically alter this economic and management paradigm and adopt a new paradigm with the aim of ensuring the well-being of populations inside and outside firms and the preservation of the natural environment with a view to long-term sustainability. It is hoped that this paper can be a guide for enterprises wishing to set up and implement a durable humanistic management, wherever in the world.

This book provides a comprehensive overview of how quality management can be rethought and revitalized to meet the challenges of today's and future socio-economic management. Presenting the outcomes of the 27th Excellence in Services International Conference, held in Bergamo, Italy, on August 29–30, 2024, the book brings together both selected research contributions and numerous best-practice examples in quality management. Researchers will gain valuable insights from this book, which offers theoretical contributions to the field of humanistic management and presents a reformulated approach that integrates quality and excellence. For managers, it offers new practical knowledge to effectively evaluate strategic, tactical and operational issues. In particular, it helps to improve decision-making processes in relation to the importance of the human dimension for the future development of quality and excellence.

Although the work of Francesco Guicciardini has not the benefit of the popularity enjoyed by the work of his friend and collaborator Niccolò Machiavelli, the political thought of the author of the Storia d’Italia can be considered one of the peaks of the Italian Renaissance. The aim of this article is to analyze Guicciardini’s treatment of religion in the C1 council which opens the Ricordi, a book of advice or warnings written in Italian. In particular, the relationship between religion and politics will be analyzed in the light of the characteristics of the C essay and the tradition of realism.

This book offers a section by section commentary on Nietzsche's early masterpiece. Particular attention is given to Nietzsche's underlying theory of the nature of culture, and its mechanisms for production (across a range of media), change and revolution. This underlying theory is often either ignored or misunderstood in the literature. In addition, the book provides a sustained treatment of Nietzsche's disgnosis of the nature of modernity. The book also places Nietzsche's work in its historical context, and documents something of its immense influence.

Plausibility models are Kripke models that agents use to reason about knowledge and belief, both of themselves and of each other. Such models are used to interpret the notions of conditional belief, degrees of belief, and safe belief. The logic of conditional belief contains that modality and also the knowledge modality, and similarly for the logic of degrees of belief and the logic of safe belief. With respect to these logics, plausibility models may contain too much information. A proper notion of bisimulation is required that characterises them. We define that notion of bisimulation and prove the required characterisations: on the class of image-finite and preimage-finite models, two pointed Kripke models are modally equivalent in either of the three logics, if and only if they are bisimilar. As a result, the information content of such a model can be similarly expressed in the logic of conditional belief, or the logic of degrees of belief, or that of safe belief. This, we found a surprising result. Still, that does not mean that the logics are equally expressive: the logics of conditional and degrees of belief are incomparable, the logics of degrees of belief and safe belief are incomparable, while the logic of safe belief is more expressive than the logic of conditional belief. In view of the result on bisimulation characterisation, this is an equally surprising result. We hope our insights may contribute to the growing community of formal epistemology and on the relation between qualitative and quantitative modelling.

The article examines the role of the youth organization Revuelta in the mobilization following the devastating floods caused by the upper-tropospheric cut-off low in Spain at the end of 2024. This catastrophe brought ecopopulist narratives into the public eye, generating a growing polarization around climate change and socio-environmental issues. It also constituted the second major politicizing event of the new far right youth, in which Revuelta added humanitarian aid to its mobilization, initiated one year earlier during the so-called National November. Using a multi-method qualitative design, we study the discursive, emotional and visual frames, and the repertoires developed by Revuelta in this context. We argue that, amidst the catastrophe, Revuelta is developing a multi-issue discourse and activism that (1) draw the attention of a patriotic youth that exceeds the traditional confines of the far right; and that (2) attempt to renegotiate the public image of the Spanish youth, highly stigmatized during the pandemic.

“Migration” has received less attention in social theory compared to other topics, and at the same time, migration research is often said to have a “theory deficit.” Against this background, we argue that it is mutually beneficial to relate and link social theory and migration research more closely. On the one hand, a stronger reference to social theories is important for migration research to break down prevailing views on migration and to further develop independent analytical perspectives and concepts that allow for a critical-reflexive distance to (national-)state and hegemonic categories. These established categories often go hand in hand with undercomplex, essentialist notions of society, as in dominant integration discourses. In social theory, on the other hand, migration is rarely addressed, with hardly any debates in migration research discussed. When migration is addressed, it is mostly to illustrate theoretical concepts and theses, without sufficiently considering the complexity of migration phenomena. In this introductory article, we outline how we can revise perspectives and categories of migration studies based on a rearticulation of social theories and, conversely, how we can rethink theoretical approaches starting from a perspective of migration (studies).

The work of Antonio Gramsci implies, in comparison with Karl Marx, a shift toward civil society, rather than state, as an intermediate category between economic structures and political institutions. Gramsci offers indeed an integral state composed of the political society (which exercises coercion) and civil society (which generates consensus). Thus, civil society becomes the site of production and contestation of ideas, the elaboration and diffusion of ideas, or, in other words, the terrain of hegemony. Our objective with this paper is to explore how Gramsci's political theory on civil society as the arena for social and political change can be used to elaborate a theoretical framework to conceptualize and analyze immigration. We highlight four dimensions that translates Gramsci's reflections to the field of immigration: class, space, common sense, and counter-hegemony. Gramsci's theory can, in a few words, contribute to understanding how migrants can question the hegemonic order and contribute to alternative visions of society.

The great Western political and social philosophers had no doubts about the importance of education. Feminist philosophers of the past also understood the significance for their own projects of educational theory and philosophy. Today, however, there is an education gap in the feminist philosophy text. Books in the field pay little attention to the subject of education and rarely cite feminist research in this area. Widely circulated bibliographies of feminist philosophy and overviews of the field have tended, in turn, to make this whole area of feminist philosophical research invisible. The feminist theorist/activist Charlotte Bunch once wrote that feminist theory must, among other things, hypothesize how to change what is to what there should be. She did not say – nor would I – that every feminist who puts forward an account of what there should be must also address the practical issue of how to achieve the hoped‐for results. One wonders, however, if it is possible to achieve the transformations of marriage, family, reproduction, workplace, science, society, not to mention gender itself, that feminist philosophers espouse without effecting a correspondingly great transformation of this culture's educational theory and philosophy.

The goal of this research is to analyze the heterogeneity of family firms in the normative attention to their non‐family stakeholders. With this aim, we suggest that the psychological process of top family managers in terms of individual affective commitment to their firms is a key variable to explain that heterogeneity. However, we also suggest a moderator effect of the family stakeholder salience in the relationship between the managers' affective commitment to the firm and the establishment of firm goals toward non‐family stakeholders. The results of a hierarchical regression analysis on data obtained from 207 family executives show a significant positive influence of managers' affective commitment on the establishment of goals related both to internal (employees) and external (customers and community) non‐family stakeholders. In addition, we can observe a negative moderator effect of the family utilitarian power—as an indicator of the family stakeholder salience—on the relationship between the family managers' affective commitment and the goals related to non‐family employees.

A bold and wide-ranging study across centuries, examining the conflict between "conventional" and "magical" nominalism in philosophy, history, aesthetics, political theory, and photography. In this magisterial new book, intellectual historian Martin Jay traces the long-standing competition between two versions of nominalism--"conventional" and what he calls "magical." According to Jay, since at least William of Ockham, the conventional form of nominalism contributed to the disenchantment of the world by viewing general terms as nothing more than mere names we use to group particular objects together, rejecting the idea that they refer to a further, "higher" reality. Magical nominalism, instead, performs a reenchanting function by investing proper names, disruptive events, and singular objects with an auratic power of their own. Drawing in part on Jewish theology, it challenges the elevation of the constitutive subject resulting from Ockham's reliance on divine will in his critique of real universals. Starting with the 14th-century revolution of nominalism against Scholastic realism, Jay unpacks various "counterrevolutions" against nominalism itself, including a magical alternative to its conventional form. Focusing on fundamental debates over the relationship between language, thought, and reality, Jay illuminates connections across thinkers, disciplines, and vast realms of human experience. Ranging from theology and philosophy of history to aesthetics and political theory, this book engages with a range of artists and thinkers, including Adorno, Ankersmit, Badiou, Barthes, Bataille, Benjamin, Blumenberg, Derrida, Duchamp, Foucault, Kracauer, Kripke and Lyotard. It places photography in a suggestive new discursive context. Ultimately, Magical Nominalism offers a strikingly original way to understand humanity's intellectual path to modernity along with its vicissitudes.

Se defiende en este artículo que el modelo de gestión democrática de una sociedad plural como las nuestras no puede resistir por más tiempo la exclusión institucionalizada en la que una parte de quienes están y contribuyen a la sociedad y a las cargas del Estado se ven privados de aquello que exige la democracia: el derecho, los derechos a intervenir y decidir sobre los criterios de gestión de la vida pública. Esos son los derechos políticos, que van más allá del derecho al voto. Y esos derechos —la ciudadanía, la participación política— deben poder estar al alcance de quienes quieren formar parte de nuestra sociedad.

Difícil resulta establecer los orígenes de una actividad, como complejo es señalar sus delimitaciones. Es un reto, pero puede ser asumido con cautela. Este es el problema al que se enfrenta la Historia Pública en España, un país con escasa tradición a la hora de incorporar a los ciudadanos en la elaboración –junto a los profesionales de la historia– de relatos sobre su pasado. Contamos, sin embargo, con una experiencia única de activismo ciudadano en favor de la memoria y la historia de quienes fueron asesinados y enterrados en fosas comunes clandestinas por el régimen franquista: las exhumaciones populares que se produjeron en España en las décadas de 1970 y 1980. Es un ejemplo de dignidad y de firmeza que demuestra que la historia difícilmente puede dejar de ser pública.

This paper studies the development of intensity schemes within the framework of the old quantum theory. It investigates how these schemes emerged in a complex process involving empirical observation, data analysis and conceptual reconfiguration and became essential tools for predicting the intensities of multiplets in the absence of a well-formed quantum theory of radiation. By applying the concept of paper tools, the study shows how intensity schemes became theoretical representations allowing both the classification and interpretation of observations and the formulation of theoretical predictions. It thereby highlights the importance of representational tools and empirical regularities within the development of the old quantum theory.

Vision and the gaze are key issues in the analysis of racism, sexism and ethnocentrism. In recent radical theory, generally, and French theory in particular, vision has been seen as a means of control. But this view is often unnuanced. It bypasses questions such as: Why is it that contemporary theories have been so critical of vision, and generous towards listening (in psychoanalysis) and language (in philosophy)? This collection of original essays brings together historical studies and contemporary theoretical perspectives on vision. The historical papers focus in turn on Ancient Greece, medieval theology, the Renaissance, the Enlightenment and the nineteenth century. These historical studies are themselves thoroughly informed by poststructuralist theory. They provide a rigorous background for several new, exciting articles on vision and its bearings for feminism, race, sexual orientation, film and art. This collection is the first of its kind in juxtaposing historical and contemporary.

The applications of the correspondence principle to multiplet spectroscopy, discussed in the previous chapter, presented an extension and rather radical adaptation of the correspondence principle in its original domain of atomic spectroscopy. The present chapter focuses on a research field that was well beyond the principle’s initial scope and studies an application of the correspondence principle to electronic collisions, which was developed in Göttingen between 1922 and 1923 by James Franck and Friedrich Hund to account for the newly discovered Ramsauer effect.

This chapter discusses the work of Fritz Reiche on the quantum theory of radiation and his application of the correspondence principle in the context of dispersion theory. Following his private correspondence with Kramers in 1923 and 1924, I reconstruct Reiche’s attempts to determine transition probabilities on the basis of the correspondence principle and show how they led to the formulation of a relation among transition probabilities, which came to be known as the f-sum rule or the Thomas-Reiche-Kuhn sum rule.

After the discussion of the applications of the correspondence principle in Munich, Breslau and Göttingen, the final chapter of this book returns to Copenhagen. It studies how physicists around Niels Bohr approached the multiplet intensity problem and its relation to the correspondence principle. Based on a set of letters by Bohr, Kramers, Heisenberg, Pauli, and Kronig, this chapter analyzes how the intensity problem turned from one aspect of the patchwork of problems into a challenge for the conceptual development of quantum theory which played a central role in Heisenberg’s work leading to his seminal paper “Über die quantentheoretische Umdeutung kinematischer und mechanischer Beziehungen” (henceforth Umdeutung).

In the summer of 1923, Niels Bohr gave a lecture at Harvard University on the quantum theory of the atom. He had done so many times during the 1920s in Germany, Britain, the Netherlands, and now also in the U.S. For almost 300 listeners in the audience, Bohr ’s presentation was anything but an exposition of well-known ideas. At least the professor for theoretical physics at Harvard, Edwin Kemble, thought so, as he would give another talk “to restate Bohr a little more slowly and simply” shortly after Bohr had left. In the very first sentence of his talking notes, Kemble formulated the central theme of his talk and explained: “the correspondence principle is the important tool.”
