Locke and other compatibilists have argued that for an agent to have free will the agent has to have certain abilities. Yet, this does not fully answer the question of whether free will and determinism are compatible. For as Geert Keil and other incompatibilists have argued, the postulated abilities that are said to be relevant for free will are themselves incompatible with determinism. Who is right? To answer this question, one has to have a plausible view of abilities first. In section 2, we argue that any plausible view of abilities will have to meet certain conditions, which will turn out to be important when it comes to the abilities relevant for free will, and provide an exemplary view of abilities which meets these conditions. In section 3, we distinguish between different kinds of abilities. In section 4, we show that only a very specific kind of abilities is incompatible with determinism and provide a diagnosis of the crucial dispute between compatibilists and incompatibilists. In section 5, finally, we argue that the abilities relevant for free will do not belong to the kind of abilities that are incompatible with determinism.

Some philosophers hold that it would be impossible for us to do something actively if the physical world were causally closed, i.e., if in the physical world all events were caused by other physical events if they are caused at all. The reason for this view is that these philosophers adhere to what I call the traditional picture of action. Recently, Martine Nida-Rümelin tried to defend this picture by phenomenological considerations. According to the traditional picture a behavior can only count as something an agent does actively if it is ultimately caused by the agent in an agent-causal way. In this paper I adduce three arguments against agent causation: (1) We do not really understand what agent causation is. (2) If agent causation were real, we would be confronted with the strange fact that human agents can only cause certain tiny events in the brain. (3) There is no empirical evidence that agent causation is real. In the last part of my paper I present an alternative account of the difference between what agents do actively and what is done to them.

Können wir auch dann in unseren Entscheidungen und Handlungen frei sein, wenn alles in der Welt determiniert ist? Inkompatibilistinnen antworten „Nein“; Kompatibilistinnen „Ja“. Der allgemeine Determinismus ist allerdings gar nicht das entscheidende Problem. Vielmehr geht es um Folgendes. Ich hebe meinen Arm. Das Heben meines Arms beinhaltet, dass sich mein Arm nach oben bewegt. Nach allem, was wir wissen, wird diese Bewegung durch die Kontraktion und Relaxation verschiedener Muskeln verursacht; und diese werden verursacht durch das Feuern bestimmter Motoneuronen. Angenommen, dass es für das Feuern dieser Neuronen ebenfalls hinreichende physische Ursachen gibt und für diese Ursachen wiederum hinreichende physische Ursachen usw. Kann es dann trotzdem sein, dass das Heben meines Arms eine freie Handlung war? Die entscheidende Frage lautet also: Kann eine Handlung auch dann frei sein, wenn es für die entsprechende Körperbewegung eine fortlaufende Kette von hinreichenden physischen Ursachen gibt? Auch was diese Frage angeht, antworten Inkompatibilisten Nein, während Kompatibilisten diese Frage bejahen. Auf den ersten Blick scheint zwar alles für den Inkompatibilisten zu sprechen. In diesem Kapitel wird untersucht, ob das wirklich so ist.
