I graduated from Occidental College In 1954 with a BA in philosophy. In 1960 I obtained my PhD in philosophy from Cornell University with a thesis titled "Reasons, Causes, and Free Will"; the chair of my thesis committee was John Rawls, the other members were Norman Malcolm and Max Black.
I was on the faculty at Ohio State University from 1958 to 1962, at the University of Michigan from 1962 to 1967, at the University of Rochester from 1967 to 1971, and at Cornell University from 1971 until I retired in 1999.
